Nice. I actually am 90% done refinishing mine. No more black spray paint...
Waiting on a forend wrench to take the corn cob off and re-do it as well. I'm a mechanic by trade, nowhere near a wood finisher, but am pretty happy with how it looks so far.

Codes should be the same. Maybe the Freedom Group 870s are different, not sure.

Make sure to post some pics! I love LE trade-in shotguns.

All the serial number info in the OP goes out the window if your prefix is “RS”. That was started sometime between 2009-2010.

I got the "blacked out" Wingmaster back together today. I like it much better without the spray paint. Did a simple paint strip, followed by a half dozen or so coats of linseed oil rubbed in. Turned out ok, I think. I have some mag tube extensions coming, but looks like that'll be 2 weeks before they get here.

Bottom pic is a before and after...of course I have them posed backwards, lol. The Police Magnum is the one with the shortened stock. Cut down 1.5 inches.

Yeah, really nice job. With the stock of the shotgun that wasn't painted black, did you repair some chipping as well? Did just the coats of linseed oil do the trick?

Great job Bob!!! You guys got me going! I have plenty of 870’s. But after you guys have been posting about the 870 police models, I just had to do something with my newer 870 tactical. I just picked up a really nice original police walnut stock set off of GB. Already have the mag extension. Gotta love the original walnut furniture in place of the newer black plastic stuff! Here is a pic of my old Winchester 120 that I put an FN Herstal police 18 inch tactical barrel on it!

Thanks guys. I just wish I could shoot them now, lol.

fidelity, I purposely did not do any repairing or even sanding. You can see some areas had darker color that I just couldn't get to be uniform, even after multiple tries with the stripper. I was a little frustrated, but then realized that was what I wanted anyway...for them to look like a 48 and 24 year old LE shotgun, with some wear and tear, and some dings and dents, but also have much more of a natural wood look instead of painted or overly faded.

Already regret not grabbing one or two more, lol.

    Dave, yours looks awesome

Thanks, guy. You're making us all regret (although I did recently pick up a new youth Remington 870 in 20 gauge with wood stock that will be for my youngest eventually :) ). Brian always seems to get nice used 870 shotguns.

I originally got "delayed", last Saturday, but was good to go on Tuesday. When I drove back up Wednesday, he had one more Wingmaster and one more Police Magnum, on the rack...I had to stop looking at them, or I would have grabbed them both, haha. Sadly, as far as long guns, with the size of my safe, if I add one, I pretty much need to get rid of one, and I dont have anymore that I'd want to let go, so...I will have to be happy with these for the time being, or get a bigger (or 2nd) safe. ;)

Well, finally finished (pun intended) them both up, swapped on the +2 extensions, and grabbed a 20" 7+1 Mossberg as well. Still need one correct sized recoil pad for the one 870, but it'll do for now.

Just got this gunbroker screenshot from BossmanPJ. Holy crap!! $1475. Also, it seems that the prices of the fixed stock guns and the folders have equalized. Other people noticed that, too?

Wouldn’t surprise me if the fixed stock become more valuable since they were actually used by the ONG.

It will be interesting to see how prices go over the next 5 years. These guns have a LOT going for them, so I doubt that demand will wane much. Once all the flippers and quick buck makers have thinned out, we might really seem some high pricing. $2,000 might be a retail price on a folder.

If prices fall, that’s even better. I’ll buy a few more.

^^ looks like my $2k estimate is going to be pretty low. Also the folders and fixed stocks seem to have equalized in price.

Is that from today or very recent? I just saw two on GB with “buy it now” at $1700/1800... which is crazy in itself, but still cheaper than this one...

Understand that I’m not hating on anyone for what they choose to spend money on, but I’m still amazed to see these shotguns shoot up so high in price so quickly. Historical provenance + rare parts + rare opportunity sure does get a lot of people excited about plain ol pump action shotguns.

Good on anyone who got ahold of one for original asking price. Even those who paid in the $1000-$2000 range may have made a good investment. Will be curious to see if they level out, fall as interest wanes, or continue to rise in price.

An original WW1 or WW2 1911 is basically the same as a brand new Rock Island GI model..... but I’d rather have that original Colt or US&S.

These ONG guns ARE military contract purpose built shotguns. For many people it is the only chance to own a REAL military surplus shotgun of any era. The trench and riot guns of the early wars are insane money now.
