My grandad recently gave me his old Marlin 336 (.35 Rem). He thinks he bought it circa 1969 and he may have only fired it a handful of times. I cleaned it up best I could and it does appear to be in “like new” condition and everything seems to be functioning properly.

I wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions/recommendations on if I should treat this as an heirloom of sorts and leave it be. I doubt the rifle is really worth any more than what he paid for it.. maybe I’m wrong about that I don’t know. Honestly, I’d like to put it to use, but I’m a bit hesitant to fire it simply given its age and my lack of experience with older firearms.

Pay a smith to check it out. I've seen an abused ranch rifle (IE dedicated tractor gun) rupture the chamber wall from rust. After that give it coat of your favorite flavor of gun preserver and use quality brass cased ammo. Avoid gun show reloads and enjoy.

If it has the JM stamp on the side of the barrel its worth $50-75 more than a run of the mill 336 but thats for insurance purposes only. You don't sell Grandpas gun.

Your grandfather has given you a desirable rifle in a desirable chambering.

Do yourself a favor. Buy some ammo, and you both go shoot it one day.

Shoot it and shoot it a bunch. If the top of the receiver is drilled and tapped consider putting a set of Skinner peep sights on it.
I wish I had one of my Grandfather's guns

I have my great uncles 336 that is just a touch older than yours. It’s in 30-30 and shoots like a dream. Have fun with that thing! Try to get some stories out of him too. Personally, I love rifles with stories!

Shoot it and enjoy it. Just remember ammo can be a pain to find, some of the majors still run it around hunting season. So if you don't reload get a couple extra boxes in the fall.

I have had a 35 rem for years. With Remington 200 gr Green box mine will kill and break bones with the best of them. Out to two hundred yards I have total confidence. Buy ammo where you find it if you do not reload. I would keep your Grandpa's rifle.

A gentleman I knew in Canada who loved to hunt, swore by his 35 Remington. I saw pictures of him posed with large white tails, caribou, black bears and moose and in his hand was his 336 in 35 rem. Congrats and Enjoy!

Keep it and enjoy it. Sounds like it is safe to shoot. Leave it 100% original. It will be worth the maximum that way. It's worth more than what he paid for it. It's a JM marked barrel. Good luck with it!

Congrats. I’ve been looking for a C&R eligible Marlin in .45-70 for years without luck. Hope you enjoy your gun.

.35 Rem was one of my favorite calibers. Why, I don't know as ballistics didn't make it out to be anything special unless you reloaded. You will probably have to buy your ammo on line as not too many stores stock for it.

The only place online I have seen .35 Rem ammo is Cabela's. They only have Winchester Super-X in stock for $29.99/box and Hornady Flex-tip for $34.99/box. Is that an average price for factory ammo or is that a panic/COVID price? I was thinking about starting to reload 12ga for my trap gun so maybe I'll get into reloading for this gun too if that is a normal price per box.

Not 100% sure but I think that is close to normal. My .32 Winchester Special costs the same. I am expanding my reloading to include .32 WS and 30-30. If I did my math right, I can reload .32WS for .60/rd vs buying it for $1.50/rd.
