Ok, so I just brought home a new 20 gauge Youth express 870.
Was trying to take it apart per the manual...
Got the mag cap off, slotted spring retainer and spring out...
BUT, the orange plastic follower won’t come out, nor will the slide operate...hung up about halfway through the throw.
I don’t want to force anything.
    Any thoughts?

To move the slide, are you hitting the slide release, on the forward side of the trigger guard? Before attempting to operate? That’s to move back.

To move forward, inside the receiver, there are two things, one on each side, you push against the receiver walls, that lets the slide release so you can slide forward. Work each one, and slide the forearm forward slowly as each side releases.

You may also be able to drop the trigger group, by knocking out the 2 pins, and removing. If the bolt is jammed half way, that may let you get in and check if the lug is wedged in somewhere.

    Work that first.

On the mag tube thing, I thought there was a “dent” inside the tube that acts as a retainer bump, but I don’t recall offhand.

And, the carrier assembly is lock up so that I couldn’t load a round, or depress it to the left and right shell latches...

Check and see if the shell lifter is stuck. That may not be the correct term for it?

This happened to me years and years ago and I think it was that the lifter got jammed up.

Tap the receiver pins out, and you can then try to remove the trigger group. If the lifter is jamming, that may clear the obstruction. As you say, don’t force it.

Thank you, all, for chining in here or on PMs.
I chickened out and called Remington to
arrange to send the shotgun back to them
    to square away.
I will post the result here.
Meanwhile, let’s all stay healthy and safe
as we dig in here in SOMD.

The orange magazine tube cap is now Plastic and it is crap! My sons was jamming all the time. I replaced it with a G&G machined piece. It is anodized red to help when checking to clear the weapon.

Thank you midnightSGT...the sad part about
your comment is that it is made, and agreed
with by many, about a once-proud brand.
    “Remington” really meant something positive
    when I was a kid over 60 years ago...no,
neither it nor any other brand, was perfect,
but at least we presumed quality and
reliability. Now, just the opposite often
    appears to be the case.
