Not sure if I already posted about it, but here is a Chinese type 53 I inherited bubba’d, the stock was cut down and spray painted, also the bayonet lug was ground off. I took this opportunity to do a tasteful revamp of the gun and make a “tanker carbine” what if build. I cut the barrel to 16.5”, mounted a 91/30 front sight with a brass stacker mount, threw it into a damaged 91/30 stock that I “trimmed to fit” lastly made a bent bolt handle from a ford 289 water pump bolt.

Thank you, haven’t fired yet but I imagine it’ll double as a flame thrower and punish my shoulder!

I suggest threading the barrel and installing an effective muzzle brake to reduce the recoil. Tanker style would do the job but will surely make those nearby uncomfortable when you touch it off!

I was looking at one for my M44. It wants me to fire it, but I think I will make it wait until I can put one of these on. I have seen some video of them working nicely at measurably reducing the muzzle jump and recoil. Unlike most I have looked at, they have positive reviews.

Of course, it will likely be louder so quality hearing protection is a necessity.

    Very nice.

    Very nice indeed.
Let us know how it shoots. But please don't install a modern muzzle brake. It would just ruin the look of the rifle.

If you found a muzzle brake that looks like an SVT 40 Tokarev one it probably wouldn't look too out of place. They kind of look like a Cutt's Compensator for shotguns, but they come as part of an assembly that includes the front site base, gas block, and bayonet lug. So it would take some searching for a comp that looks similar or cutting down a buggered SVT original.

Nice work by the way. It doesn't look Bubba, that's all fine looking work.

Thank you! A brake isn’t really on the horizon for this one, heavy recoil and an obnoxious report and fireball are part of the charm of a build like this. I’ve even gone as far to come up with a b.s. backstory how the Chinese made a few of them for paratroopers/tankers and the soldiers gave the gun the nickname “dragon” because of the authoritative report and massive muzzle flash

I know I’m de railing the thread a bit, but where would be a good rifle range near the Pasadena area? Most of my range time has been at a buddy’s farm that’s now being sold so I need a new venue
