I ended up getting this Remington Model 721 in 30-06. It belonged to my wife's grandfather. The scope is adjusted by adjusting the scope base; there is no windage / elevation adjust on the 2.5 X 8 Bausch and Lomb scope. The base is also Bausch and Lomb. I am going to clean it up and see how it shoots. The 721 was made up to 1961. I believe the original owner had it as early as 1955.

The original owner (Harry) did a lot of deer hunting with this rifle. We also found maps of Western MD and Canada, and a large fry pan that looks perfect for a camp fire. Also some old Remington 30-06 ammo, and Lyman reloading dies, bullets and brass.

Harry left a lot of notes from circa 1955 up through early 70's. Looks like the rifle is sighted in a 200 yards, and is dead on at 25 yards and 200 yards (see pic below).

The topo maps are from the US Gelogical Survey; also topo maps for Canada from the Dept. of Mines and Technical Surveys.

    Interesting; thought I would share.

I have the same scope and mount on a commercial FN Mauser I inherited from my dad. Beautiful rifle, he carved the stock for it in 1960 and the scope is the same vintage.

That's awesome. I have both of my grandfathers rifles and I am proud as hell to have them.

Looks like he was an avid shooter/hunter.

sometimes history isn't just about the story it tells, but the age of the story. Frankly speaking, I adore old rifles, I have one left to my father which he gave me "Winchester 22 caliber". But was without scopes. I was thinking my granddad was used to metal sights: not very sure. but I decided to look into the best scope for 30-60, yeah I found out there are lots of them. I really took my time to finally come to a conclusion with the one I'm using today "Nikon Buckmaster 3-9x40"- and I never regretted it for once. Although everything sometimes can fail - or maybe I'm just a lucky one?

Very nice rifle and an even better story. You might want to think about writing down the stories you've been told. I'm sure your grandchildren will want to hear about this man.

    Congrats!

Oddly enough I think the maps and shooting data is way cooler! I love old crap like that.

They have their own version of cool. Wood and steel is just one side of this story. You are correct, the paperwork is just as amazing.

Speaking of maps - I found a bunch of old Army maps from when I was stationed in Germany. Also maps from the middle East dating back from the first Gulf War. I could cover an entire wall.

I used to work narcotics and found a really old map of Lincoln Heights housing Project. It has highlighted apartments indicating where to go on the search warrant, it has new areas drawn on in pen, and it has attorney phone numbers and local no longer existent restaurant phone numbers for delivery on it. The map is probably worth less then 2 dollars but IMHO it's one of the coolest things I own.

Maps are a thing. Both from pure collecting, and Map Geeks with intrest more in the historic progressions , historic context, and geography of the contents.
