I didn't read all the posts so I hope I'm not repeating. I think the pope is speaking of nuclear weapons because Korea and Iran are the big topics in world news. Lighten up....I think you guys are suffering from post maryland gun grabber syndrome or something

The Pope's tweet - in the first post - is pretty clear.

"Do we really want peace? Then let's ban all weapons so we don't have to live in fear of war.

    (Emphasis mine.)

Agree to disagree here. With all the Parkland shooting fallout in the news he could just as easily have been inspired by that as by the nuke issue. I'll take him at his word.

Hey, he's divesting himself of a Popemobile ... presumably to reduce Car Violence in the world.

"Do we really want peace? Then let's ban all cars so we don't have to walk down the street in fear of being run over."*

    * (not an actual Pope quote)

Cain and Able, not David and Goliath.

Yeah, I got the cain and able reference (including the significance of god favoring the shepherd over the farmer given the people that created the story). I was just adding another instance where a weapon was used to kill in the bible that wasn't a firearm. In the david v goliath story, imagine how the fate of the jews would have changed if david DIDN'T have the sling to conquer goliath.

You could also do something similar with #arkcontrol, since joshua used it as a WMD to drop the walls, before slaughtering every person inside the city(except for a prostitute and her people).

Nuclear weapons have only been used twice, and their use brought WWII to a swift end. If he is speaking of nuclear weapons, he has it way wrong. They finish wars, not start them.

    Too MUCH To Ask????

Yes, but if we could yet achieve peace in the world, would giving up our guns really and truly be too much to ask from the Holy Father?

They're only steel and in many cases plastic. Are we so wed to these material objects that we can't give them up for the vicar of Christ?

    HELL, YES!!! :mad54:

By the same token, it's probable that the 70+ year gap from the last World War is because most major powers have nuclear weapons that can be delivered to an adversary in about as much time as it takes to make a box of Kraft Mac & Cheese. Sure there have been wars in confined geographic regions (e.g. Korea, Vietnam, the Middle East) involving the US, China, and/or Soviets/Russians at different times, but no global conflagrations with the major powers attacking each other. Peace through strength, with nuclear deterrence being a real thing.

Deterrence only works with nation states that really have something to lose, though. A non-state terrorist organization with a nuke? Mutually assured destruction is not much of a deterrence.

As for the pope banning weapons, does he mean weapons like the ones his predecessors used in the crusades?

P.S. Love the mac n cheese unit of measure!

I, in no way, was advocating nuclear proliferation to stateless entities or even two bit powers. As you said, they don't have much at stake, and likely have less checks to stop a vainglorious leader bent on making a historical statement.

However, my original point stands. We have had relative worldwide peace because the major players have nukes. What the current Pope is suggesting would lead to instability and greater conflict.

yup. This video also demonstrates why a civilian population MUST be armed when it gets to civilian deaths at 7:30.
