New to the forum first post here.

Today I went to dicks in Glen Burnie to buy my first shotgun. Getting the Mossberg Scorpion. I filled out all the forms electronically and then waited patiently for the green light from the clerk to buy the shotgun. He comes back and says im on a wait list and it will take a few days to process the background check. I am an HQL holder and I also hold a federal clearance. He said its because I'm a federal agent that it will be delayed.

It reminded me of my friends father who purchased a rifle from the same Dicks and he had to wait a week for his background check as well and he is not federal agent and he doesn't have an HQL.

Has anyone ever had trouble with this store processing simple non regulated purchases same day? Also is there any truth that federal employee background checks take longer?

Totally bummed, been waiting forever to get this specific shotgun and planned to take it to the range on Monday but that isnt looking likely now.

Welcome Robbie. It is customary to tell us about yourself in the introductions section. I don't think that this is a dick's issue.

Last week I bought a Henry Goldenboy .22lr Rifle from their Wheaton location. I was in and out in less than 15 minutes. Have to agree this is not an issue with their stores. Yes I have seen numerous federal employees with a clearance get delays for no good reason. I guess to put you on yet another secret watch list? Be careful if you buy too many it might raise some red flags. Wouldn't want to piss off the Gubermint. :evilwhip:

NICS would have had Dick's hold the rifle, not the store.
    https://www.fbi.gov/services/cjis/n...criminal-background-check-system-nics-appeals

Reasons NICS Background Checks are Denied or Delayed
A "Denied" message from the NICS indicates the subject of a NICS background check has been matched with a similar name and similar descriptive information of a record containing a state or federal prohibition.

A "Delayed" message from the NICS indicates the subject of a NICS background check has been matched with a similar name and similar descriptive information associated with a record containing a potential state or federal firearm prohibition. The NICS Section must obtain additional information before making a final determination of a Proceed or Denied for the firearm transfer. The NICS Section is afforded three business days in which to conduct this research. If the NICS Section is unable to provide either a Proceed or Denied response to the Federal Firearms Licensee within three business days, the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act of 1993 does not prohibit the Federal Firearms Licensee, or FFL, from transferring the firearm; however, the FFL is not required to do so.

When the FBI system was first set up, it took longer to access people with clearances as it had to access several other computer systems. I went to the FBI in West Virginia and they told me to ask for a supervisor and tell him my situation and he would give it a proceed if this happens to me. I did and that worked fine.

That was long before they did a couple of big upgrades to their systems. I can't remember the last time I had a hold it has been that long ago.

This sounds like a Dick's employee issue to me.

When I read these threads about Dicks, Bass Pro, or any other store I just do not believe it is the store causing the hold up. If you are cleared they will sell and give you the firearm. If something comes back to them from NICS saying to hold or deny then they do that. Why would anyone believe a store just takes it upon themselves to make you wait a few days to buy their goods?

Yeah im not suggesting that the employee went rogue or anything. I was the one who typed all the info in the system with him right next to me when he sent it to over. Just found it funny the same delay im experiencing is the same my friends father experienced two months ago at the same store. When my brother in law went to buy his mossberg maverick88 there about a month ago they said the nics system was down so he went to walmart ten minutes later and bought from there with no problems

Interesting. You could make the argument that someone with a clearance should go through easily since they have been vetted so thoroughly already. But also make the case that someone with a clearance can get into federal buildings and thus needs to be vetted more thoroughly.

As has been stated, this isn't a problem with the retailer but rather a problem with NICS. Why are you NICS delayed? Your guess is as good as anyones. I also get delayed frequently and I don't know why. It is what it is.
