Two firearms I wish I could have gotten were my great uncle's 1911 and what my grandmother described as an Arisaka. When my great uncle passed away his wife gave the firearms to the PD for destruction *sad*.

My mother was a scientist during WWII working on the proximity fusing mechanisms for the Manhattan Project. She didn't get to bring one home. They were used in Japan.

That's awesome! That was a very important invention (the proximity fuse).

She also helped develop the proximity fuses used in anti-aircraft shells used during the "Battle of Britain". It doubled the German losses. She received the Civilian Excellence award directly from Truman at the end of the war.

Neat! I watched a documentary that had a section on the proximity fuses and explained how important and effective they were. Truly a future weapon of the time.

I have a German K98 rifle that my dad got in WWII. He told me he got it at the factory, and that it was new, packed in sawdust. As far as I know, its only been fired about a dozen times.

I have my great uncle's WW1 uniform and purple heart.

Another purple heart from another uncle 4th Marines, WW2

I became friends with a veteran of the Afrika Korps through a group I belong to. After he died, I got his k98k. This was not carried in the war but he got it after the war. He was captured in Africa, joined the US Army and was sent to the Pacific and basically made a career here in the Army. His family was all killed back in Germany during the war. Alas, I did not get his Afrika Korps hat.
