"Gold Plated" AK's

They are favorites of third world dictators and cocaine kingpins. But what are they exactly ?

Are they plated with actual jewlery grade Gold ?

Are they plated with an industrial plating that has a gold like color ?

Is it ceracoating?

And why only AK's ? I get it that in middle east or africa, thr AK might be the ubiquitous rifle. But why not the occasional AR or FAL, H&K, whatever ? In latin america , AR's are also common and well known. Former UK territories would be aculturated to FALs.

You can gold plate many metals using a cyanide based plating process. It typically involves other layers between the steel and the gold, iirc nickel alloys and sometimes cadmium.

And why only AK's ?

Because most third world dictators are dumb phuks who got into their position by luck and access to more AK47s than their opponent.

Someone posted pictures of Goerings gold plated gun here. Brutal despots are all the same.

I have seen a copy of Saddam's Gold Plated AK on display in DIA. Not very impressive, if you ask me. Seems like a waste.

I work at the Clinton Foundation. My boss received a gold plated MP5 from a foreign dictator with a terrible human rights record for some kinetic peace actions for his people we helped him with.

Idk their firearm collection is pretty cool. The gold plated PSL is sweet and all the deactivated AK's.

Gold plating is usually 24k (solid) gold. "Jewelry grade" gold is an amalgam, generally 14k or 18k. Your old high school ring is (hopefully) 10k.

Dubya Bush displayed one of the Hussein gold plated AK's on the wall of the Oval Office for a while, & enjoyed showing it to visitors. It quietly disappeared. My guess is that it is in the National Archives warehouse.

The Husseins also gold plated the bathroom fixtures in their palaces. Dictators & potentates usually order gold plated fixtures for their private jets; FWIW, that was Trump's choice for his private 757.
