    Yoshi's Dad said " More Powerful ! " . Yoshi is * Assuming * Dad really meant " longer range " .

Two different things . No, actually three different catagories discussion . Ask Dad for clarification, does he want :

Similar trajectory, but whole lotta Whomp on both ends ?

Somewhat more power, AND comparatively flatter trajectory ( with good ammo availability)?

Long range in the absolute sense ?

    Different answers for each.

I have a Rossi Rio Grande in 45-70 and it is a fun gun to shoot but the ammo is pretty pricey at 1.40-1.60/ round
A 30.06 lever would be cheaper to shoot with ammo at about .75 cents/ round but the Browning 30.06 lever is about twice what a Rossi or Marlin in 45-70 would run

30.06 is cheaper in less than 400 rounds

    Nah.You'd start reloading .45-70 before 400 rds.

    Indeed!!!!!!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

I started reloading .45-70 before firing the first factory round.

Winchester and Federal rounds (that I saw) were 300 gr JHP.
Remington had 405 gr jacketed RN (and was rated for Trapdoor rifles).

    I wanted 405 gr hardcast lead. :D

Yes, I did buy two boxes each of the Federal and Winchester ammo.
They shot very well, but, I prefer the 405 grain handloads.

Winchester 86's are expensive but available in .45 70. I use mine in my club's buffalo shoot (.40 or better, lead only and we shoot 100, 150, 200 and 300 yards). Lot's of hold over but fun to hit at 300 with such an old cartridge.

How about the Henry Long Rangers? .223, .243, and .308.

Whaaaaaaat.... I am suddenly interested in level-guns!

Talked to Pops this weekend and passed on all the options y'all mentioned. Of course, he was like: "What do you think?" I hate when he does that. Didn't know about the Long Rangers 'til this morning, so that'll be more info that'll mess with his brain.

I would vote for the .308 since I am set up to load for it, but the 45/70 and its versatility is intriguing. The 45LC makes sense because he already has a revolver...

Eh, who knows. I'll let you know what he decides.

    Thanks again!

Well if you're thinking .308 look at the Savage 99 in .308. Great lever gun, not too expensive, accurate and a classic.

There are several more powerful calibers; 444 Marlin and 45/70 are good ones. Browning has lever actions with a box mag so you can have any of the popular big center fire rifle cartridges.

If you got 45-70 their are some great prices on 1895s out there, add the Marlin $100 rebate and you have a fairly good deal. Even a Rem Marlin at those prices is a fairly good buy. Shop well and for around $400 after rebate you have a working gun without a lot of investment.

Per a previous post I would probably just go 30-30 for mid-American game power, shootability and cost (my carry along gun is a Marlin 336Y). But if you really want to get into big bore, the 1895s are not bad.
