Who in a good 1911 gunsmith - I don't need the most expensive but want it reliable. Also interested in someone who can hard chrome the receiver.

    Thanks

Not sure about the hard chrome, but Scott at Scott's Gunsmithing is the man. He knows 1911's very well

John does great work! Not sure how busy he is nor how far you are willing to travel

Walt Frear, in Monrovia, also does beautiful work and showed me a custom 1911 built on a caspian frame. You can find Walt’s information at TriggerDoctor.com.

Why hard chrome? As far as I know, that kind of work is normally farmed out to plating companies, I can't remember any smith advertising hard chrome plating. I could be wrong though.

It is illegal for anyone or business to take possession of a handgun for any work for more than 24 hours, unless they have an FFL. This includes giving the weapon to a friend to merely install "Drop-in" parts, like a Volquartsen trigger kit or a simple cleaning.

Check with ATF if you wish to confirm this.

While indeed true, virtually all of the plating companies who actively offer firearms plating have FFLs for this purpose .

Added - only a few big time custom makers do plating inhouse , most indeed send them out to a specialist .

Just wanted to give a shout out to Trikshot (John Carduner).

Had an issue with a cheap ATI 1911 I bought where the safety wouldn't properly engage. Did a search and found a few threads referring John. Took the firearm to him to go over the issue along with some other work and he's done a phenomenal job. If you need work done on your 1911, I would not hesitate to shoot him a message.
I'll be looking to take my Springfield and RIA to him in the spring for some additional work.
