Basically I want to take my G21 in to get night sights installed. My preferred shop is pretty far out of the way. And I'd like to do it during the week so I can take it shooting this weekend. Obviously I cannot take a firearm in Washington DC, which is where I work. If I take just the slide without the barrel, recoil spring, etc, would that be considered a firearm?

My gut tells me it would be fine but I want to make sure I'm in compliance with the law.

Everyone above is correct. Just like you can get an AR15 upper shipped to your door. Same thing with handgun slides, for example I got a SIG 226 9mm slide assembly (barrel and everything) and a glock 22LR kit shipped directly to my house.

Yes, and well don't tell anyone. Reminds me the time I was traveling to S.C. on the train (prior to 9/11) so I called ahead to State Police VA., N.C., to find out the laws, to which each (state trooper) replied "well don't tell anyone".
