Does anyone know the legality of travelling with a family member's firearm? I may have a need to take my wife's pistol as a backup for an upcoming event in addition to one of my own. :innocent0 :sad20:

FWIW, I would be driving through Maryland and WV.

    Thanks.

    Ahhh, not so clear

And you should rightfully be questioning this. In the eyes of MSP, this would be considered a temporary transfer since the owner of the firearm would not be in control of it, which would require an HQL.

Thanks - I did call the MSP and the answer I got was that it was fine as long as I had permission. They also told me I could have her write a note lol. My typical experience with the MSP is that 5 of them will have 6 different answers, so I figured I'd see if folks here had any opinions or experience as well.

According to the AG one can loan a regulated firearm to an individual as long as the barrower was capable of being qualified to have a HQL. The average person has no way of being certain an individual meets this standard The sure way of doing that is only loan a regulated firearm to someone who has a HQL.

AG opinion attached. If the owner is present,. seems legal to me.

    IANAL

Just to confuse the issue a bit further, what about C&R eligible firearms? You don't need an HQL to purchase, so is it reasonable to assume you wouldn't need one to borrow.

Of course, reason is not a high priority for MD laws and regs.
