Lets say you had an older model 700 in 270 and wanted it to get rebarrelled to 270ai or 280, but you wanted the actioned tuned up, the wood stock bedded and it to be a performer but have the look of a time capsule. Who would you farm the work out to? I found a diamond in the rough 1972 270 that if I cant get it to shoot I'm going to want to give it a second chance at life. Main goal will be deer, pig, paper, and keep the vintage look and feel.

If you don't mind sending it out, I have had good service with quick turn around from Short Action Customs in Ohio and Long Rifles Inc in Sturgis, ND.

The work I had done was 1 week door to door.

The good local gunsmiths were quoted 6 months to get to the work.

Ed "Doc" Harren in ijamsville. Benchrest and varmint specialist but does beautiful hunting rifles too.

If you want it rust blued and woodworking done, check out matt ilko of foxhole firearms/rogue machine up in fairfield. Seen some resto 700s he has done and they are beautiful.

A lot of the delay with "locals" is getting the specific parts a customer wants. I brought doc all the parts for a job. He was done in three weeks. He's sometimes been even faster for certain jobs, like m5 extractor installs, depending on his workload and if it is hunting season. One thing for sure, his metalwork is always on the mark. Never seen a bad crown or out of round chamber or even heard of one from others. Had the privilege of shooting a varmint for score rifle he built. I am normally a bipod and bag guy but that rig out of a shadetree rest was incredible.

Scotts Gunsmithing in Glen Burnie (industry partner) did some work on my R700 (rebarrel, thread muzzle, trued reciever, and cerakote) and I was extremely happy with it. Took a lil while for him to get to it tho.

Not worried about time, thanks for the recommendations. Id much rather give back to a shop with ties here than mail off to a random shop I dont know of.

I would reconsider, two bad experiences there is enough.

Ed did a prefit barrel install for me in 1 day. I am going have him build me a varmint rifle.

Don't know if you are set on specifics for your build but he has done some wicked rigs. He's a fan of the .20s but I saw a sweet 6ppc on a 527 under the knife in there a while back. I keep contemplating having him do a short throated 223ai tube for one of my rigs. I can tell you he has a nice mid throat 22-250ai reamer in his box. In a 14 twist you might be limited a bit but in a 12 it is perfect. 55 boat tail Noslers into little cloverleaf every time. Imr4064. A bit more than suggested.

War Rifle in VA. They do great work.

Drew (WAR rifles) does do great work. I own some of it. But OP is in snow hill. Central md is a bit of a hike. Manassas park, even more. If willing to travel into other states, add in Hawk Hill (the barrel maker) who have done work for several of my friends. I know two of their guys and they are a solid option.

I will fourth or fifth doc. Three rifles have been to him. And I'm coming from salisbury. While I'm sure others are great, this is my only experience.

I didn't know he was a fan of 20s when I asked him if had a 20 Practical reamer. He listed a bunch of 20s he has. I am going have him build me a 20 off a Origin or Nucleus action.

I vote origin just because I like zermatt. If you go nucleus, be sure it is a gen two. Cool actions but if I want a tighter bolt rotation I will go sako or tikka.

Doc likes the 20 tactical and 20 ppc. The 223 culver and 223 Ackley both merit your consideration as well.
