Interesting. I worked at Radio Shack back in the 70s. In fact I was a store manager for while. People used to criticize the shack and their products at that time. Olson's and Lafayette were better, they said. Don't know what the competition was around here. I understand that they were sold or spun off from Tandy a while back which is why they changed so much.

I too miss them because they did have a lot of parts and kits. Now as I entered the amateur Radio world, I was like "Where do I get cable, masts, etc now. And where can you get a clock radio, now? We did help people with questions about installations and parts back in the day.

And what do I do with all of my Battery Cards?
That was a blast into the past :)

We had a Lafayette store in our rural area. I lived for the Olson's catalog to come. At 13 I had saved a truck load of lawn mowing and hay baling money to buy an Eico Oscilloscope kit from Olson. I used that scope for many years! After I got a drivers license, I hit the Lafayette store weekly. Never had money for drugs or liquor.

Well circuit city is supposed to be making a comeback so maybe RadioShack will in a few years after it’s completely dead too.

I seriously doubt it. Not the way it was originally, anyway. Today, you call for service or throw away and buy new. No one builds kits anymore. (Well, almost no one)

Radio Shack, Olson, Lafayette, etc. did not just sell radios, stereos, etc. They sold parts and components and had a good variety. I remember selling tubes, needles and crystals for scanners. None of that is coming back.

I was really surprised a few weeks ago when someone at work went out and bought a capacitor to fix some electronics. First the they were able to ascertain that a capacitor was needed and second that they were able to find one locally.

There was a Heathkit store just off Rockville Pike on Nicholson Lane many years ago.

I built a color TV from a Heathkit.

Beautiful picture too by old day standards.

https://www.parts-express.com has good prices and quite a selection.
The last time I went into Radio Shack last year and asked for solderless crimp terminals and heat shrink tubing the guy looked at me like I was asking him for left handed screwdriver. He had no idea what I was talking about, neither did the other employee. They couldn't even tell me where to look. I finally found what I was looking for.

My favorite story came from an acquaintance who went to RS about the time of the change over of over-the-air TV to hi-def. Coupons were being given out to people who had incompatible older sets for adapter boxes that would allow them to be used with the new signal. So she went to RS to redeem the coupon for an adapter.

At first the person waiting on her had no idea what she was talking about so he called over the other guy who was working in the store who knew what it was an went to get it.

The first guy asks about why she needs this box and she explains that she has to have the adapter and a different antenna.

He asks, "What did you do before?"

    "I used rabbit ears".

    "What are 'rabbit ears'?"

"They're right on the wall, behind you."
