Howdy all. I've been kicking around the idea of getting a small .22LR revolver for plinking fun and introducing new shooters to the sport.

I've been looking at the Ruger SP101 in .22LR.

I haven't heard about it, except that the trigger is a bit heavy and rough.

Anyone here have one? Were you satisfied with the trigger, fit/finish and reliability?

    Thx!

I've fired one. It's as good as the other Sp-101's in my opinion. A cheap set of Wolf springs will improve the trigger and you'll have a really nice trainer.

Agreed. Wolff springs for the Ruger SP-101 will do wonders for the trigger pull and "feel", however, there's an Important Note at the top of the page:

Due to changes in this gun by the manufacturer, the spring below will not function in SP101 .22 caliber rimfire models manufactured during and after 2011.

Strongly advise you call them and get the details before ordering.

Good suggestions, and I agree, S&W's do have sex appeal, I suppose. But their L frames are a too big and heavy for me, and finding a good K-22 for the price less then a new 617 seems almost impossible...

True, nice M-17s or K-22s are running $700 and up these days but new .22 SP-101s are running around $600, and aren't easy to find, either. I've seen new 617s at some of our IPs for not much more than that. 617s are K-frames, shouldn't be any bigger or heavier than the Rugers. Just an idea - I personally prefer the look and feel of Smith, even with the internal lock.

I saw several used S&W model 17 (K-22) revolvers in very good to excellent condition at this past weekend's gun show. Average price was around $650 to $750. I would buy one of those in a heartbeat versus the SP101. The SP101 isn't bad. The model 17 is in a different league.

I have a S&W Kit Gun, the 34 I think? I would save up and hold off until I found one of those or any other Smith and Wesson.

I tried one of the SP-101's in .22 and didn't care for it at all.

    Just about 2 hours left.

Joppa's 617 would be a good choice as well.

I'm sure it has a way better trigger then the Ruger.

That's an early post-war 5-screw on GB. You will love it more than any SP101 or 617 ever made. I'd jump on it for $599, but I just bought a 4-screw shipped the same time I was, late '56. I've been meaning to post some pictures to the revolver porn thread.

So would I if it's in good shape.

Oh man... Now that's tempting. What are the chances it would stay at $599? I'm gonna guess zero.

The auction ends in 43 minutes and no bids yet. Chances are if you bid $599, then you get it.

Look closely at the pics, though. The cylinder is a different color. Something to be cautious of.

May not mean anything. The guns of this period were in the matte blue they introduced after the war to simplify the manufacturing process and meet the pent-up demand. For awhile, they were selling this as the standard finish and offering the "bright blue" as an option. The bright blue then became standard later in the '50s. I've noticed with the matte blue guns the color of the cylinder sometimes seems to age differently than the frame.

If I hadn't gone full retard on buying stuff lately, I would have bid on that in a hot minute.

I just got to work and found out that a friend of mine is going to buy my Colt upper. If he would have told me that last night, I would have bid on it.

Oh well. Win some, lose some.
