Welcome - Our Uncle Sam moved me here to......and I never left :)

I can't answer your question about bringing guns into MD but I can tell you that if Illinois is your home of record you should not be paying Illinois state taxes.

I too was an Illinois resident - didn't pay a nickel in Illinois state tax on my military pay in 25+ years.

I just wanted to make sure you caught this - Illinois does not tax military pay - you are exempt. If you have been paying, I'd highly recommend you look into getting it back.

Not to be nit-picky, but since this is for the benefit of the new guy OP, fixed a typo in the required purchase date for now banned scary looking rifles.

Not sure how I screwed that up, but thanks for the assist...edited for correction.

    Say hi...

    2) the laws you seek to answer your questions stem from the FSA 2013. It is the most recent abomination from our State Capital regarding Firearms.

    Welcome.

Now I think it's funny because I was going to say at least you're not going to Cal. But you are coming here from there.

If you had the firearms while you were in Cal. how did you get around the clusterfvck laws in that state?

why can't a now banned foirearm that was legally possessed before 10-1-13 be brought into the state? It's not illegal, and if he intends to establish residency, he has 90 days to do it.

    Edited.

If he owned it prior to 10/1/13, yes, he can bring it in.

If it was purchased after that, he cannot.

I have been PMing with him, and was more clear there.

I do not believe MD will let you put any address on your MD license other than a MD address. If that is the case and you get a MD license, then the 90 days to register your regulated firearms begins, regardless of what your home of record is. When I was active duty (centuries ago) I kept my OH DL and renewed it through the mail.

No, getting an MD drivers license does NOT establish residency for Active Duty military.

I have not looked at the latest Soldiers and Sailors Relief Act, but when I was growing up, my parents kept FL residency. All the cars had FL plates. BUT, they were required to get a DL from the state where they were living. So when we moved to MD, they had to get MD DLs.

I forget what the process was, as they did not have to take the tests, and in VA one time, they had to fight the DMV over this, as they wanted them to take both the written and driving test. I don't remember the details, as it was a LONG time ago.

It actually wasn't all of that difficult. Just a little research and you were good to go. I had the bullet button and the 10rd mags so I could have all of the scary stuff on there. Just ask around on the forums there and people will point you in the right direction.

Big thanks to Pinecone and everyone else that has taken the time to educate me on your guy's laws!

So, if he had the scary stuff already*, and MD doesn't distinguish with/without the bullet button, then he can remove the bullet button, buy some regular capacity mags (out of state, of course) and actually come out ahead, correct?

*wouldn't it be before 10/1, on 9/30 would still be legit, right?
