I have a chance to buy one out of state. Never fired. 30 round mag. Flip up rear sight. $600.
I don't know much about AR's. Never owned one. Only fired one 6 or 7 times.

I checked other threads and I think I have this right, just check me please.

The rifle is an hbar, so no transfer and out of state cash and carry os OK, right?

Would you recommend this to an AR noob?

Is this as good a deal as I think it is?

    Thanks, in advance.

i have been considering one myself. while i am also a newb, all the research i did on this gun came up positive. that also seems like a great deal to me; most i see go for 650-675, but youll have to get a more knowledgeable person to answer the out of state transfer Q. and yes, it is an hbar

Here is a good review of the SW MP15 Sport, My buddy bought one last month from Engage Armaments and has been really happy with it so far.

It is an HBAR ( OTC), 1:8 5R Rifling. The only thing different from a standard AR is the lack of a forward assist, dust cover and the lower has a non- standard trigger guard. NO malfunctions for the first 150 rounds using 62 grain S/B ammo. Only shot it at 25 yards. Will take it out to 50-100 yards next week with various ammo.

You should be able to buy it over the counter( OTC) in neighboring states as it is not regulated.

If you buy it out of state it has to be transferred at an FFL (although there are limited exceptions to the rule.)

at I was told... You can buy it from out of state and ship it to an FFL. OR you can buy it in person from an FFL/dealer from a neighboring state and it transfers over the counter.

I bought a Colt Match target HBAR AR this way from a Va dealer.

No offense, because the DPMS is a good starter AR.... but the M&P 15 is better. My first AR was an ARMALITE AR-10, but my first AR-15 was a DPMS.

By the way, rather than get an AR-15, just get the AR-10... it's not regulated either. :)

I have to say this but one well respected FFL here says that the S&W Sport is not a heavy barreled AR.

Anyone want to use some calipers and measure the barrel under the handguards?

Another well-respected FF here says that the S&W Sport is an HBAR. It's most certainly not a government profile nor is it a pencil barrel.

Just telling you what I was told. What sucks is that MD's laws are so screwed up that two dealers who know their stuff have two different views. How are we supposed to know if the dealers have conflicting views?

I have never seen this rifle in person, that is why i mentioned having someone measure the barrel.

I've handled one in person, and I definitely think it's an HBAR, but I don't have my license on the line.

Depends on who's definition you are using this week. If you follow the guidance in MSP 96-1 from the state police, it's clearly a sporter variant and not regulated. However, BGOS and BFFLS are rampant in the "free state" and I don't blame any FFL who plays it safe.

I picked up both of them as HBAR cash & carry. The top one bushmaster has HBAR marked on the barrel, but the M&P below does not.
