This article claims that there have been at least 461 deaths caused by "assault weapons" since 2004 and that 85% of Marylanders supported SB281. Has anyone seen the figures anywhere to support this claim? I tried to research and determine how many people have died by the evil "assualt weapons" and couldnt find much before. Also does anyone know where the 85% came from? Im frustrated :/

85% came from the handouts at the town hall meetings. If its printed without sources it must be true. Don't question our shitbag leaders!!

those are total US deaths since 2004, across 50 states. That's one per state per year over a period where there were about 200k homicides total.

    fify

that's 461 over how many people who owns guns?? hmmmm... whats that..

lets make a guess.. 1 million assault weapons in the hands of us residents..
    that's what?? 0.05% over 9 years?

    :lol2:

    edit:
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog/2012/dec/17/how-many-ar15-rifles-sold
2m manufactured from 2000-2010.. that's just for ar15.. so the percentage on above calc. will be way lower.

461 deaths caused by "assault weapons" since 2004?
That's about one death per state per year.
What they won't tell you is more people are killed by being beaten to death by bare hands and feet, and even hammers.
Clearly legislation against "assault hammers" and "assault hands and feet" can save many more lives.

Not even 500 deaths in 9 years? And this is an "epidemic," yet there's over 30k deaths in automobile accidents every year... I guess that's just an "acceptable loss" for the convenience of easy transportation? These people, man... :sad20:

Also keep in mind that "assault weapon" doesn't have a nationwide legal definition. It's likely to include SKSs, scary-looking 10/22s, and other firearms not affected by SB281.

    But think of the children!

    Juuuuust over the line
The Horrible Martin O'Malley has been quoting an accurate number of supporters, his copy just had a typo. His copy said 85% of the people, when it was actually 85 PEOPLE in Maryland who support this bill.

And of those 30k deaths per yr, about 11k-12k per year are alcohol related. There are no calls for banning alcohol sales. In fact whenever DUI reform comes up before his committee Valario tables everything so it never comes to the House floor for discussion.

But if you suggested that, they'll just point out how prohibition didn't work and just created a black market for illegal alcohol sales... and then when you say, "Exactly!!" they look at you like you have two heads.

    What's in a word ?

DEATHS ... not murders, not homicides, not assaults ... DEATHS !!!

Our mealy-mouthed governor plays on words and visual images to paint a picture in the malleable minds of the press who hang on his every word. He's almost Obama-esq in doing so. Use assault weapon and death in the same sentence and what has everyone here already concluded, and even launched into defense with counter arguments ? What about bad guy deaths, accidental deaths, hunting accidents, and gawd-forbid accidents involving children ? Could it be that the huge number of AR/AK-type rifles in circulation have some bearing on the number of DEATHS involved ? If it were a Remington bolt-action 30-06 attributed to 461 DEATHS, would he sound so convincing ? Assault weapon and DEATHS ... who knew ?

As the old saying goes ... the devil is in the {statistical} details. Calling John Lott !!!
