A 1911 with a 21 rd. mag would look much worse. Maybe an STI double stack with a 21 round mag would look OK but the Army can't afford those.

They won't say. Only that the rifles are in operable condition and ready for use as necessary at any time.

The father of a friend of mine was a sentinel back in the early 70's, but I don't remember if he ever said anything about how it was back then.

The Tomb was originally created to house the remains of an unknown soldier from World War 1 and currently houses the remains of a WW2 and Korean War unknown as well. The Vietnam unknown was identified and Lt. Blassie's remains were removed to Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. I personally feel the honor and remembrance of all the Unknown Fallen would be better represented, not by guards in the ultimate spit and polish with the latest weaponry, but by guards wearing World War 1 kit and carrying weapons the original Unknown would have known and recognized.

I have no problem with it. Colt, Remington, Winchester, Springfield could have done something like this as well. But they didn't, Sig did and I salute them for it. I don't think the Army asked for it either. I would imagine they will never leave the armory, or maybe on occasion by the commander, duty officer or on special ceremonies. Sig makes some fine firearms.

They will be worn every day by the relief commanders, who are the only ones that carry pistols. The sentinels carry M14s in ceremonial stocks, and the relief commander (the guy who marches the relief sentinel out and does the inspection for the changing of the guard) carries a pistol - currently a special M9, and soon these SIGs.
