In Maryland with an HQL and valid Handgun Permit,
does the gun you carry have to be registered.

It is not stolen and has a serial #
so a real, legit handgun, but one you have owned for a long time and never registered.

    Is this valid?
I have tried to do searches and could not seem to find this exact questions.

There is no gun registration in Maryland. Unless you came here street a certain date and brought your gun with you.

I am not an attorney and thus is not legal advice.

Or to reframe the idea , you aquired them thru private ( instate ) transactions before Oct 1, 1996 .
You brought it with you when you moved to Maryland before Oct 1, 2013 .
You aquired via your FFL003 thru Interstate Commerce .
You made it yourself for your personal use .
It is a temporary gratuitous loan .
It is issued to you by your employer .

Of course these have to be factually plausible . Ie , if you purchased it privately before 1996 , the gun has to have been mfg'ed / imported before 1996 , and you had to have been over 21yo before 1996 . If you aquired out of state before 2013 , you had to have actually had Residence out of state before 2013 , and been of age at that time .

google is your friend, I am not.
My belief is that some instructors are alluding to the fact that DC requires registration of the gun, and this confusion is further compounded during some interviews where the trooper asks what gun the applicant will be carrying, as if the applicant cannot change their mind. You do not need to carry the pistol that you qualified with, and if you want to shove into your pants your home built AR pistol with the 2" barrel, go for it.

Due to a series of tragic boating accidents, I venture that few of us have guns that are not registered.

You can carry an handgun you like with your wear and carry permit, there is no requirement that you own it. There is no requirement that it be serialized. There is no requirement that it be registered (voluntarily or otherwise).
