I found a Luger today that I have a chance to purchase. Talking with a local gentleman, who was a cold war tank driver, who is looking to consolidate his collection hinted that he had a Luger that he would sell. He couldn't remember most of the stuff he had but I went over there to take a look. In the first safe we had some Colt colander 1911's, S&W .357 mag revolver (first year the FBI was issued them according to him) and a lot of rifles.

3 Rifles I picked up were really nicely done sporterized Mausers. His brother was an enthusiast and built these. I know we don't like sporterized Mausers but these were really nicely done. He actually gave me a publication by his brother on "How to custom build your Mauser".

    Anywho - The Luger

I don't know a lot about them other than it is on my list. This one is a 1937 BYF looks to be matching. It has 1 matching mag and another that looks more commercial. It has black grips and some of the war eagles are present. It does however look like some have been peened and I cannot tell if it has an import mark on the underside of the barrel.

Thoughts? It is in my possession and I can get pictures if needed.

Going to update pics through my phone

What crack head would import mark that so close to original markings?

Looks like an excellent condition pistol OP

You guys think it is worth picking up for the right price. Any recommendations on price range?

Anything else to look for on this one?

It's a East German VoPo Luger with the grips and postwar barrel. I'm guessing that is the import mark.

    Concur.
(The Crown/N and 1952 date point to an East German-manufactured barrel).
There's probably a VOPO marking on it somewhere on frame, or peened out.

I don't follow Luger prices but if it was me I'd offer $600-ish, you could always get that back, especially if the mags are pre-war or war-era and not post-war/aftermarket.

Even junk is going for $1000.00 now, Id jump all over it at 600.

DDR loader tools have ridges, DDR mags are marked 2/1001. This is my matching (DDR barrel, all other parts match) two numbered matching mags, holster. Cool Cold War history.

Yours has a grooved tang, mine is smooth. Mine is made by Mauser I think. My holster is well worn with stitching gone, no date that I can find. The leather has survived well, great quality.

Shooter grade Lugers that are mix masters but decent overall shape are usually well north of 1000. I saw one with matching external numbers (at least) that had little finish but a clean bore in ok shape. The mag didn't match and it went for 800 and the buyer was happy to get it.

Holsters can go for 200 or more....much more if WW II.

Not sure what he wants for it, he said take it home and let me know what you think. The Matching mag is marked 2/1001 but the other one does not have anything on it.

So we know the barrel does not match, what else should I look for. The holster looks good and is still soft although it has some mold on it. No markings

If its reasonable just buy it. You cant go wrong with a luger.
