He's going to the 4th ID - Mechanized Infantry and Armor

He doesn't need to worry about Airborne or Ranger now, He is going to be a Dragoon, a tread head grunt. He's going to be learning to ride hard and fast in Strykers or Bradley IFVs. If he s good on the light mortars then he probably get picked to train and
crew the big 120mm heavies which are usually trailer or track mounted.

He needs to get some seasoning in the field and to really learn how the Army runs and works if he wants to be a lifer. The 4th ID is a good place to start.

Ft Hood. Did a little job for them a few(many) years back at the 'Sports Dome'. Almost had my head chopped off there. Fond memories.

Killeen, Texas. Lots of Yuca to stare at...

Sorry my friend but the 4th has been at Ft Carson for awhile with the BRAC

As for Ft Hood, an old Armor OBC classmate of mine is now commanding III Corps.

My Son did tell me that he will be part of 4th Infantry Division. Their Division Insignia is etched in my mind.

I'm sure you're right. When I was there, we we're working under the auspices of the IV ID. I did a few of these for the army. Maybe another thread. This one belongs to the Chad's.

I was in the Army for ten years. That's a mech infantry unit. Slots for Ranger and Airborne are usually filled by those soldiers assigned to those types of units. O/W I think it's going to be harder to get a slot, but not unheard of. Also I don't know how the previous administrations budget (or lack there of) has effected the class size for these schools as of late. I've been out for a while.

For an 11C who wants to hone their mad mortar-skills, the 4th ID is a great first assignment! Congratulations to Chad II!

Yes, back in '81, we got "Visitor's Sunday" on the Sunday before we graduated (on Thursday). My mom, brother, and then-girlfriend came down to MCRD SD for that and, even though I was right in the front of the platoon, my mother didn't recognize me until I walked right up to her and smiled. I guess that's what happens when you lose 63lbs in 12 weeks!
I don't remember having "family time" the day before graduation (maybe a Parris Is. thing?) but we did have base liberty. I made phone calls, went to the PX, and tried to IMAGINE how life would be without a Drill Instructor telling me when to eat, drink, sleep, wake, and "get in 'The Pit'" ("Rose garden" for you PI guys).

Congrats to C2! This is something that he's earned and he'll value it. And please pass on our thanks to him for his service to our great country. I hope, at some point, he gets a chance to go abroad because, it's one thing to grow up thinking that you live in the greatest country in the world, but it's another thing entirely to go abroad and, not only find out how true that actually is, but to learn to appreciate all that we have here (which most people take for granted).

I was at PI. I remember the Sunday before graduation in 1981, where we got "base liberty" and lots of guys went on a junk food binge and the next day they puked all over the track that we were taking the final PFT on.
