Great review, tallen. Between what you've posted and the pics that DA was sending me yesterday, I think I need to get lunch there soon.

I forgot to add to my review that there was some good eye candy in the cosmetics department right by the food court while I was there today. She definitely didn't need any of the products she was selling! :innocent0

Much better food court than Rockville.
Sunday's after church are great for eye candy. Everyone's dressed to impress.

Just seeing this "now open" update... will definitely visit next time we're in Frederick.

I gotta disagree, Wegmans is good for a lot of reasons but if you are married to an Asian... or really like Asian food... then your local Korean grocer is the shizzle.

We have a family policy/tradition that you get to have whatever you want for dinner on your birthday. Most "normal" children would ask for tacos or burgers or hot dogs. The Daughter reliably asks for Crispy Duck. That requires a whole duck, skin on, quartered and fried in a cast iron skillet full of duck fat. (She gives me crap if the skin isn't crispy enough.)

H-Mart or Lotte to get the duck. I'm glad there's an H-Mart up here, because I used to have to drive down to Gaithersburg to get the [admittedly delicious] duck.

I'm from Rochester, so I have an extreme bias towards Wegmans :D

I've been there 3 times, they have the best seafood selection hands down. I tried the Sushi at the food court on Sunday for a late lunch and it was pretty good for the price. I haven't bought anything but seafood yet, but checked out some of the prices on other things, they seemed about the same or a little higher.

I don't know what to make of this thread, but it's showing the low standards of the area. H-Mart is Ok, and similar to 99 Ranch markets I used to go to when I lived in CA, but there are some very good local Chinese grocery stores in Oakland that I used to go to that would put H-Mart and 99 Ranch to shame. Unfortunately, there aren't any stores like these in the East Coast. Even New York doesn't have stores like the ones I've been to in Oakland. Compared to places like Giant and Safeway, however, H-Mart is great.

Oh, there are plenty of crap H Marts, but the newer ones out here tend to be pretty fantastic. And yes, they crush Giant, Safeway, etc. Wegmans is their only competition and those are two completely different demographics....

Well, California has a much larger population of Asians--particularly the SF area--so it's not really a fair comparison. We have low standards because we have fewer choices.

I live in the biggest city in Maryland and we still have to drive 40 minutes to hit up the nearest Asian grocery stores in Ellicott city. There is one 10 minutes away but it's small and only good for dry or frozen stuff.

You make a good point. There needs to be more Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Filipino, Thai, and Indian stores in MD, VA, and DC area. We're missing out on lots of good food. I'm beginning to miss eating rambutan and lychee during the hot summer months.

My wife and I visited the new one in Frederick last week and I was impressed with their produce section...so many things I didn't even recognize. Quite a few interesting pastry items also. I had my first taste of Jack Fruit. Nice. I had to go home and read about it to learn what it was.

Yep Sir! A monthly long drive to a smelly third rate store the size of a garage was a requirement if you didn't want you bride to move back to Seoul, Tokyo, Manila, Bangkok, or ,,,

Then we got Korean Supermarkets! Wow!

Used to be the only Asians in this area were our military wives and a few families attached to Embassies. Not a fair comparison with California which had Chinese, Japanese, and Koreans established by mid 19th century.
That's like looking for Soul Food in Kearney, Nebraska and complaining it isn't Atlanta. You have to look at it in context.
