So, I have a Polymer 80 lower that I've been meaning to crank out for some time now but have never gotten around to it. I finally got an x-y axis slide-vise for my drill press and have it all installed but found that the table is too high even at its lowest position, and when swung out of the way, the base with the T-slots is too low for the end-mill to penetrate far enough to effectively mill out the fire control pocket.

I need about 2" added to the base of the press for the vise to sit higher. Would 2" of wood bolted down to the base with the vise secured to the wood with beefy lag screws do the trick? Or am I missing a pitfall here?

That seems reasonable to me. The lag screws will likely hold it better than C-clamps or whatever you would have used to secure the vice to the table would have done, anyways.

The polymer lower will cut pretty easily, so you don't need gigantic lag screws.
