Made a trip up to Woodbine Saturday morning to look at, and buy a couple new shotguns. Had always wanted some "older" Remingtin 870's, and Brian at South Carroll Sporting Goods had a fair amount of LE trade ins.

Decided to get one Wingmaster, and one Police Magnum. Plan to TRY my luck at redoing the wood on both. The Wingmaster's wood is painted black, but the Magnum's wood isn't too bad at all.
I actually had a used, real decent "Police" stock for it, delivered to me today.

Alphabrew found some info on the history of the Wingmasters

    My Wingmaster is stamped:
    Receiver: SxxxxxxV (S=1968-1974, V=2.75" shells)
    Barrel: B W
    Receiver is also stamped: BDE-7

If I am decoding it correctly, it is a January 1972 model, from Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics (BDE-7)

    The Police Magnum is stamped:
    Receiver: BxxxxxxM (B=1994-1996, M=3" shells)
Barrel: L Q (also has what looks like an 0 4 as well?)

Appears to be made in February 1996

One of the last ones Brian at South Carroll Sporting Goods, still has, still has a sticker saying the same

I'm already 2nd guessing my decision to strip the black paint off of the Wingmaster...the more I look at it, the more badass it looks, imo...

Love them. I am slowly trying to get into LEO and military marked shotguns.

I need to do some research, because I want to do a mild restoration on both. Just dont want to hurt the value, if there is any.

I "could have" gotten in on the ONG 870's, and really, REALLY kick myself in the ass for not grabbing at least one... :(

My newer 870 Express Tactical is no comparison to how smooth these 2 work.

I may be right there with you starting a new collection, lol

I used Citrus stripper to strip the paint off a painted wood stock before. I toothbrush is good to get into the tight spaces.

After a rinse/dry and some scuff sanding, I used tung oil to refinish it. A 1in wooden dowel clamped in a vice makes for a handy way to hold the fore grip and rotate it around while putting on the tung oil.

    Is "Citrus Stripper" a brand?

I got a bunch of cheap aluminum roasting pans and brushes from the Dollar store. I put the wood in the pans and brushed the stripper on pretty heavily, let it sit overnight and came back the next day and scraped off what was loose with a plastic scraper. Then put more stripper on the areas where there was still paint. I used a toothbrush to work it into the checkering. That was probably the toughest part to get the paint out of.

Still drying, but turned out great, in my eyes anyway, lol.
3 stages of gel stripper, then a good wipe down, followed by 3 coats of polyurethane applied with a clean rag.

No repairs done to any of the dings or dents.

Waiting on my forend wrench before I can do the "corn cob" forend.

Thanks. Unfortunately, once it actually was dry, it looked horrible...Had a haze to it, looked chalky, if that makes sense?

I stripped it again, and just hand rubbed multiple coats of linseed oil, and it looks much better, IMO, and more natural, with just an almost flat finish.
