Good Learning/Reference Books Japanese Swords

Thinking of sticking a toe in the Japanese sword market. Been looking at some NHBTK hozon etc to avoid getting scammed but would like to start the long learning curve to be able to identify different styles, eras etc.

What are your go to books and websites?

Feel free to post any reference books or similar you use for other vintage blades.

Nihonto Message Boards - tons of info and many knowledgeable experts are members there. Spend some time reading threads in the Nihonto section (http://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/forum/3-nihonto/), learn the terminology of Japanese swords and what makes a sword good or bad. I’m attempting to ease my way into this area of collecting as well but it’s certainly been overwhelming...lots and lots to learn.

And while not directly related to your question, I learned a lot about the traditional Japanese sword making process from this video. Pretty neat to see one be made start to finish in the traditional manner:

Go the the Maryland Arms Collectors show in Timonium in March. There will be dozens of Japanese swords on display/for sale. Nothing like seeing the real thing.

Good luck

Jerry
