Just finally got my hql and my first handgun. Its a hk vp9. My question is that there seems to be a lot of different ammo out there. I was told 115gr is best. Im not trying to win any competitions. Anyone have any input?

I'll give you the general answer

115gr FMJ has the most velocity being a light bullet, it's the cheapest out of the 115 124 and other even heavier bullets abover 124.. under 20 cents is a good idea of what you should be paying for target ammo (115gr) which 99% of most use being the least expensive.
For defense ammo many prefer a 124gr or 124 +p Hollow point for a hair more velocity out of a slightly heavier bullet for more penetration in a defense situation, 124 is what many LE agencies provide their officers

115gr is not the best, it's the cheapest, easiest to find, and every 9mm pistol eats it. It's not the most accurate available, and most of it is pretty dirty. I bought 600 rounds of Winchester steel cased ammunition for the break-in of my RIA 9mm. After the first 150, I've found unburnt powder in the action, and it's very loud when fired. It's cheap blasting ammunition.

Go to any WalMart & buy 115 grain FMJ Winchester White Box Ammo...

FMJ = copper clad lead ammo = full metal jacketl...

It will fire every time & tear a hole thru anything you need to shoot...

    It's a great practice round...

Avoid steel cased or steel bullets...

RIA told me I should be using 124gr ammo in my RIA 9mm after I had trouble with the 115gr not cycling properly. Had to send it back twice to RIA and now it eats anything. I reload 124gr and mostly shoot that now. 124 gn can be harder to find and more expensive than 115gn.

My go to is Speer Lawman 147gr. Matches my carry weight, subsonic, and fairly inexpensive ($220/1000) so covers all my plinking and training needs.

You need to determine which ammo is the most accurate out of your gun . I would say to grab a couple of boxes of 115, 124 and 147 grain from different mfg's.

124gr FMJ is hard to get at Dicks and Wal-Mart. Once and a while they have it. Bulkammo dot com is a good source. You'll just be breaking it in for a few hundred rounds, although it shouldn't need it. Also, start getting your HP or Self defense ammo choices sorted out too. It's pricey, but you'll need to make sure it works and is accurate.
Winchester Train and Defend line of ammo is good. Wal-Mart should have it. The Train is 147gr FMJ. It's well priced too.

I have been a lurker in this forum for a couple months, but I bought a VP9 in July. I recommend 124gr until it is broken in. The recoil spring is very stiff and you might have some malfunctions with 115gr. I read this on the HK forums and didn't believe it. I believe it now after trying 115 gr the first time at the range. I have 600 rounds through it and it is fine with 115gr now. I used Blazer Brass or Federal American Eagle to break it in. I have since been using Blazer Brass 115gr with no issues.
