    Hi all,

New member, 1st post. Relatively new firearm owner. Purchased WW AR15 online a few months ago for a great price; however, I want to buy my handgun local, if it makes sense, from one of the ranges I frequent in Frederick. These jokers do no budge on price it seems. Do you folks have any advice?

    Thanks

Go up to Hafers in Hagerstown. It's not that far of a drive and they have some good prices.
They are an IP here so, you should might get some kind of discount.

One of the only reasons I stick around MDS is because the Curio & Relic section is a much friendlier place than the rest of this forum tends to be.
Very little sniping and snarking, and I'd rather see it stay that way.
The sarcasm and passive-aggressiveness is not appreciated.

"Thing is, 98k's can be had for the same price as a Nagant now. "
Where? I haven't seen a decent 98k under $800 in a while, but admittedly I don't watch for them specifically.
Really nice all-matching run much more than that.

I don't have a Mosin, and probably never will as they don't really do much for me.
But I won't crap on someone for liking them, their history, and/or owning them.

I wasnt. I own a couple myself. And i appreciate the history. They just arent worth $300-$550. That was my point

    Oh, and here you go:

Both. I shoot at both, and they seem very uninterested in matching prices. I’m adding back in transfer fee and cost of replacing mags (handgun comes with 15rd) so the prices make sense. Thanks for replying. Just realized this prob wasn’t the most appropriate thread to post for this question

I'm still in shock that Cabela's actually knows the difference between a Tula and an Izzy Mosin. They must have had the vendor do the product description for them.

Shoot, I'd love to see them get that price for it! I'd sell mine if they did! :lol2:

Joking aside, Remember, those suckers were $79 at SAMCO for the better part of a decade? They were practically begging people to buy them. I grabbed 5 at one point just because I could given that they were so cheap. Then, 6mo later when SAMCO went under and Classic and AIM snapped up the remaining Spaniards, my $395 investment turned into $1000 at internet prices, let alone what some people would actually pay for them given mine were in much better condition. I made out like a bandit in the end. I did enough horse trading at gun shows with them to get some decent pieces worth well over the $395 I paid initially.

A couple years back I picked up 2 Mosin Nagants from Keep Shooting for about $100 each. I figured for that price I couldn't go wrong. I think I'd be hard pressed to pay $300 though.

I don't want to get your blood pressure up but, when Century first got M39's, I bought several cases at $89 ea. I did the same with pristine M96 Oberndorf Mausers.

I really never thought our Country would be like it is today. :sad20:

Some of these old mil surp have a lot of appeal and some don’t. But we all will disagree as to which fall in a catagory. So i say buy what appeals to you if you can spare the cash. As many have said, you probably will not loose your money and you can enjoy what you bought. That’s more than you can say for a car or a pair of cowboy boots. A bot suprised that the k31s didn’t jump in value given their quality. Suppose that’s the price of neutrality.

Yikes! That's one sad Wolverine. An organ donor at this point.
There are a couple coming up in the next RI auction. One of them is a rare nickel plated example in pristine condition with perfect box and a letter from author Don Findley (Bill Ruger's .22 Pistol, The Whitney Pistol) stating that he got it from the Wolverine's designer Bob Hillberg who was the pistol's first owner. That one will bring at least the $3K pre-auction estimate. Let the money fly!

Mosin Nagant prices make me sad. Sadly the market seems to be supporting them. Never would have realized the one i bought for $50 ten years ago would quintuple in value.

Thing is, they arent worth it, not even close. This is, i guess, an example of mass hysteria.

Nagants are crap guns that handle like crap, shoot like crap, and look like crap. And while there is value in being a cheap, heavy hitting rifle....these things arent cheap anymore.

At these prices i will stick with quality US made stuff, instead of Eastern bloc surplus.

I agree, once they started to get close to $200 i was no longer interested.

Yup. Just look at the K31 prices over the past what.... 3 years? A $250-300 fine piece of Swiss craftsmanship nearly doubled almost overnight. At the end of the available stocks, $300 got you a bottom of the barrel, no troop tag, beat-to-hell stock that was cracked or straight up broken. Want something nice? $500 is the starting price bub....

I predict that the Arisakas will be the next to climb over $300.

K31s in decent shape have been in the $400 range since at least 2014. Schmidt-Rubins, other than IG96/11s, have been in the $325 range since at least 2014. Those prices stayed relatively stable until 2017. All of the foregoing have doubled in price in the last 2 years because, other than Simpson, no one has them anymore.

Kicking myself I didn’t grab a K11 or K31 when Classic had them back in the spring/early summer when they were only running around $400/500.

Only had my C&R since May and I wouldn’t have ordered one before that. But at least I grabbed a ton of stuff while there were a few things still out there. Swiss stuff interests me, but it isn’t near the top of my list of wants.

Your opportunities are waning fast. When I got my 03 FFL in 2014, Simpson’s website was pages and pages full of Swiss rifles. At the time, there was so much available stock of so much surplus stuff and I was primarily interested in Mausers and M39s and chose to spend my money on those. I remember thinking that the Schmidt-Rubins and K31s were so ugly that I couldn’t see one in my collection (and certainly not the 5 that I now own). The only reason I finally saw the light was due to my after-thought addition to my shopping cart of a K11 for $339 when I was buying an M1948 from SOG. That K11 turned out to bear serial number 9 and a troop tag that led me to the owner’s family in Waperswil, Switzerland who graciously sent me pictures of him in uniform with his horse (he was a dragoon). I was so fascinated by that history that I went on a buying spree.

If only. It’ll probably pass me by. My wife isn’t too happy about all those guns I bought this past year. On top of that I am in the process of buying a new house and selling my current. But there is overlap. I don’t out my current house on the market till we’ve bought and moved.

So I’ll have 1-2 months of multiple mortgages and none of the money out of my current house. I literally can’t afford to spend any money on guns or gun related things till probably at least mid June at the earliest. Figure more like sometime August by the time I’ve moved, sold and settled in enough I can even think of broaching buying another gun to my wife.
