You have 10M and above as a tech. Not much propagation though to work with. I suggest you start studying and upgrade to general.

I'm close to taking my exam and I'm looking at mobile radios. Which band would be the best to start on for a mobile rig?

clearly most traffic is on 2m. But I would seriously consider a dual band (2m/70cm) as they are not much more in price and gives you more flexibility adding additional repeaters.

I really was set on getting the Yaseu FTM-100 but for $130 more the FTM-400DX has been really great. Check the nearby radio clubs to see if they are running Wires-X repeaters. If so the ease of wireless digital radio communications is amazing.

2m has the most traffic but get a radio that will do 70cm as well. The radio I use in my truck is actually a Yaesu HT (ft-60). I have a mag mount antenna with a short sma adapter to go from the antenna bnc to the radio. When I need to get out of my truck I can simply unscrew the sma adapter and screw on a 1/4 wave whip and bam I can move on foot. I will probably get a permanent mobile mount eventually though and it will be a dual tuner 2m/70cm rig.

Tech privileges are here:

http://www.arrl.org/files/file/Tech%...Privileges.pdf

If your into CW then you can go clear up to 80M. For other digital modes you'll need to upgrade to general. I have never heard digital modes on 10M besides CW.

Go for the general. It's not that hard. I think it took me about 6 solid weeks of studying. What helped me was setting a date, the ARRL general manual and hamstudy.org.

Right now I have to string up my 130' EFHW every time. It's a pain and I don't get much reception with it only being 10 feet or so off the ground. Hopefully another ham with a drone can help me place it better (hint: vette97)

The FTM-100 will be my next purchase. The wife just purchased a $700 iPhone so I think i can swing a $300 radio. I want to start operating from the car. I have 2 other Yaesu products and so far impressed with quality and performance. Here's a list of system fusion repeaters in MD:

If not, there are classes and test sessions going on almost all the time. I believe the Davidsonville club does exams every weekend at their clubhouse, and the Millersville club has exams once a month at the National Electronics Museum in Linthicum, next one being Sept 24th. http://www.arrl.org/find-an-amateur-...e-exam-session
