so does the gas block size matter, ie .750 vs .875, or is it just based on the barrel profile/contour and where it's placed. ie bull barrels just generally have larger gas block diameters by virtue of their "girth."

It doesn't matter. A gas port is going to be whatever dimension it needs to be, no matter what the diameter of the barrel is.

I mean, technically a larger gas block would have more surface area to radiate heat as well as likely more mass to absorb heat as well.

Not going to make a lick of difference unless you are attempting to melt the thing down.

Those dimensions refer to barrel diameter at the gas port journal. Not the gas port opening. So yes, size does matter. .750 means the barrel diameter at the journal is 3/4" wide. .875 is around 7/8" diameter. Your block MUST match your barrel diameter.

Well that part is absolutely true. Unsure if OP was asking if the size mattered for his well it worked. Which if it doesn’t match the barrel size...matters one he’ll of a lot. So long as it matches the barrel though, there isn’t really a difference in a gun with a .75, .875 or .625”. Other than the barrel itself has some obvious extra or less meat to it.

There was some confusion in subsequent posts referring to gas ports, which I don't believe OP was asking(but who knows?). In respect to gas ports, if anyone cares, they do vary in diameter, depending on barrel lengths. The longer the barrel(read dwell time), the smaller the port. The shorter the dwell time, the wider the gas port.
