Celebrating my new Marlin 1895GBL figured I’d pose it with my only other .45-70 entry from the other end of the spectrum.

Had this one for years, have the correct light load ammo for it and only shot it once due to age, it’s a Springfield M1873 rifle with an M1884 gate. 1882 stock, receiver dates to 1884. Unique V P Eagle P P barrel marking.

That look great, especially with that stock.

I have an 1873 as well that was gifted to me by family. Spent a bunch on the proper black powder loads, but I am ashamed to say I have yet to find the time to fire it. Been thinking if I get a modern lever action .45-70, it’ll give me a nudge to fire the old gal. Let us know how you like the Marlin!

I only fired about 2 or 3 of the black powder loads years ago to test function, didn’t want to chance it beyond that but have the remainder of the 3 boxes I bought. The newbie will eat the modern stuff, and it guess I’ll be picking up a set of .45-70 dies so it doesn’t eat my wallet too.

Love that Henry! I’ve been looking for a C&R eligible .45-70 lever action to join my 1873 for years without luck, part of the reason I might just give in a pull the trigger on a new Marlin.

What type of sights are those? They look different from the ones that came on my .44mag Big Boy. Also, what is the recoil like with that 45-70 round coming out of a relatively short & heavy lever action?

They are OEM sites with a brass bead front site. I typically do not use scopes and have been consistent hitting a 6 inch plate target at 200 yards. LASIK is a wonderful thing. Recoil is that of a 30-06 not as sharp, I shot a Magnum Research 45/70 revolver but decided on a 50 cal S&W BFR

Have not had time to work up subsonic loads for 600gr hardcast to hit marylands 1200ftlb requirements.

It's a form 1 build I did. It's 12"x2" and makes the big 45/70 ridiculously quiet. Does a much better job than my 46 Hybrid.

Started life as a solvent trap. I have 6 "solvent trap" suppressors and I've learned a lot making them. Everyone is always surprised how effective they are considering the short form 1 wait times and much cheaper "solvent trap" prices. I have $500 total (including tax stamp) in my 45-70 can.

That is pretty cool. The Bowers VERS 50 is on my list of things to get which is a similar size. A form 1 22lr can has been on my todo list but I am not sure I would trust a diy threaded together can with a full size rifle. How do you determine the safe pressure and do you proof test it with a hot load?
