Got a Ruger Precision Rimfire a little while back. Came without a scope.

I'm by no means a long distance shooter, probably will shoot it anywhere up to 200 yards or so.

What would be a good reasonably priced optic? I like the Nikon Prostaff but I dont know crap about scopes.

I have a Nikon Prostaff Rimfire II 4-12x40 on one of mine (.22LR), and a Vortex Crossfire II 6-18x44 on my other (.22wmr) and am happy with both. The Vortex has an adjustable objective for parallax correction.

If I had to buy both over again, I would go with 2 Vortex Crossfires, but have no real complaints about the Nikon.

What distance are you typically shooting at?

The .22LR usually 50 to 75yards occasionally to 100. The .22WMR i have shot out to 200, usually use it at 100 though. (My usual range, Myrtle Grove, is only a hair over 100 yards)

I like both scopes a lot, I like the additional "zoom" and the AO on the Vortex. I wouldn't and don't hesitate to use the Nikon for now or any future rifle.
The Vortex is larger and a bit heavier if that is a concern, IIRC I also had to use higher rings, dont remember which ones I used though it was a while ago that I mounted them.

This is what I’m using on my RPR Rimfire 22. 3-12x40 has been great to 100 yds for me, but I bought this RPR to someday compete in Precision Rimfire competition (when I find more time that is). The 12x leaves a little to be desired at 200 yds, and PRS Rimfire goes to 300+. I can hit steel all day at 200, usually, but not group well if that’s what you’re into. Maybe more magnification on the upper end is the ticket?

I’m by no means an expert in rimfire optics, and I know there are way better scopes to choose from. I’m a Bushnell fan since the 80’s, and I only wanted a decent scope for the RPRR so I could shake it out and get very good with it before I start replacing and upgrading things. So far, this has been well worth it, even at this price point. TBH I currently won’t even consider a scope less than $750 for any of my hunting or long range centerfire rigs, and this one doesn’t really disappoint me at all (other than precision at 200 yds).

Once I learn the rifle’s limitations, as well as my own, I may swap out to a more long range / competition oriented scope. For now, I’m pretty happy with this one.

Now if I can just settle on a rimfire load to use, too many choices and I’m stuck in analysis paralysis for some reason.

Good luck, and let us know what you come up with.

I have one if you want to look/shoot. Similar to weaver rv9. When I bought mine it fit between the Vortex viper and vortex diamondback. But Vortex didn't make anything with objective adjustment that was not chinese. I loved my vipers but side focus would not get me close enough for rimfire and the vipers were pretty big. The rm is a pretty nice scope.

But IMO, the leupold is the gold standard.

I don't think you will find anything better.

Your other ammo issue. Your rifle will pick what ammo it likes best. Accuracy is keeping below the sound barrier. I am a big fan of Nammo ammos. SK+, wolf, Lapua.... IMO Wolf match extra or SK+ is the perfect compromise of price and accuracy. Sub $1000 rifles are only going to be so accurate, no sense in buying $20 a box ammo. But you will get more value out of a $6 a box ammo that your rifle likes than you will out of a bucket of cheap bullets.

Are my goto ammo stores for rimfire ammo. Nammo/SK makes nice HV ammo also.

I would say stay away from caliber specific scopes. I had the Bushnell posted above and the turrets were always a little off, mostly due to varying velocities. I shoot out to 300yds at the Mayberry matches and use a Vortex 5-25X50 Viper Gen II. If you get a rimfire specific scope it will most likely stay on a .22, if you get a MIL/MIL or MOA/MOA quality scope it can go on anything.
