Will a 1:9 twist reliably stabilize a 75 grainers? I was under the assumption that it would, but not reliably which is one reason I'm leaning toward the Howa or Tikka.

Hornady Manual, 9th edition, page 156, "NOTE: It is recommended to use a 1-8" twist barrel or faster" referring to a 75 grain bullet item number 22792. Keep in mind bullet length is more the driver. That particular 75 grain bullet is longer than the their "boat tail" bullet. So I guess the right answer is it depends.

I just got a CZ 457 (17HMR rimfire) varmint model, and I will have to say the workmanship is awesome. I am seriously thinking later this year on a 223 model with iron sights (CZ 527).

One of our IP's sells these

I have the 527 carbine .223 in walnut not the birch. Its one of the most beautiful well balanced guns I own. Only downside is the older ones used to be 1:12 which shoots well and I have run 62 grn in it successfully but not as good for heavies as their current 1:9 production.

Honestly - I think 1 in 9 will work for everything up to 68 grain; I don't think there are any bullets in that range that are too long to stabilize. The most problematic round is the military tracer round; I believe that's why the military went to 1 in 7, to stabilize those long tracers. Also, some of the longer, high BC 0.224" civilian bullets may require 1 in 7 as well (e.g., Hornady GMX item number 2281) in 16 " barrels. So that's another factor; 20 or 22" barrel bolt gun can probably get away with a 1 in 9 twist more easily than a 16" barrel.

If I save some pennies for a while, a CZ527 carbine is probably my fave so far although I really should handle a few others to make sure. What do folks think though, should I look for the full stock version?

I can see a few places where those are still available (not many, but there are still some out there), so that's an option. I like the looks of both, and there's the 20" American-style stock version too.

    So many choices!!

Be patient they always seem on sale somewhere around the holidays. Also make sure you know what you want they have an even shorter youth carbine

I am not big on the full stock; would rather have a free- floated barrel. They do look nice; I guess it's more personal preference. I think there is a Lux model with a longer barrel if that's something you like.

Does that model have the 1/12 twist?
