Have a coworker who is just getting in to shooting. Wants a .22 and wants it to be C&R so he doesn't have to get the HQL. He handled my old man's MKII target and liked it.

If you were on the hunt for a C&R Ruger would you go with the standard or the MK I target and why?

Also casually WTB a C&R Ruger Standard or MKI target :lol2: he has me in the mood to get one now.

Definitely go for a target model with adjustable sights. I'd get the bull barrel over the longer, slimmer barrel, although the latter has a better sight radius.

Better yet, get a High Standard target model.

He might need to decide for himself. The weight and balance are different for the tapered barrel. I like a little more weight out front than a Standard, personally.

Not mint, but made in 1966. Is this thing really C&R now?

I no longer have my C&R and we are both residents of Maryland, so.....

Dont need an HQL to transfer a c&r eligible handgun. C&R license also doesn't help with in state handgun transfers. Go to barracks or dealer, do 77R like the old days, take possession in 7 days.

Oh. I didn't know that was still the process. I was under the assumption (mother of all f*ck ups) that the HQL process applied because it was a handgun, in Maryland.

United had a C&R Mk. I Target for $275 a few months ago.

You can find Standards cheap on Gunbroker because everyone calls them Mk. Is. An auction that's correctly labeled as a Standard slips under the radar occasionally. I got one for the starting bid because no one else bid on it, but then the shop managed to rip me off on shipping.

The Mk. I is certainly nicer with the heavy barrel and target sights, but the Standard is still quite enjoyable to shoot and accurate.

Very little difference between the MKI & MKII.
The MKII was given a slight diagonal cut at the rear of the receiver to better pull back the bolt. They also made the magazine hold 10 rounds compared to 9 rounds in the MKI.
The sights on the MK1 originally were fixed on the Std model, but in later production near the end of the MKI era they began putting the adjustable target sights on both the Std & Target models. I have a latter MKI that has the adjustable target sights that was on it when it was purchased by my elderly neighbor who gifted it to me.
I also have the MKII model that is marked on the receiver "Target Model" with adjustable sights. Both have the tapered barrel and are amazingly accurate. My daughter and I save bottle caps for when we go to the range and shoot them at 10-15 feet. lots of fun.
