    Yes , '73s were in common use for hunting/ utility rifles well into the 20th cen.

    I read another update on it. It's a 44-40 and was unloaded. The pic in the article shows the stock embedded in the ground and the front half of the barrel deep into a crook in the tree. The rifle was spotted in November by a park service person and an archeologist carefully extracted it out.
