2. More information on Tuesday night's meeting on the proposed King George shooting range
************************************************************
EM Doug Peterson is good at research and he provided me the following information about the meeting to discuss the proposed King George shooting range:
* Looking at the Municode for King George County regarding firearms, lawful discharge of firearms is exempted from the noise ordinance.
There is no prohibition on the establishment of shooting ranges. In fact, I couldn't find any mention of them at all. These guys (the range developers) could build any kind of range they want, but the County will likely want some safety measures (e.g. backstops, berms, etc.). Since there are no established county codes for such facilities, the county could impose prohibitive restrictions (too expensive, acceptable performance criteria, etc.) with no basis other than claimed safety measures.
See Section 10-8 - Noise ordinance:

* See this link for a map of the golf course. Any of these fairways would provide ample range space. Over 300 acres? We only have 29 acres at Lafayette Gun Club!

Those opposing the range are having a meeting this Tuesday, August 28th, at 6pm at:
King George Citizens' Center
8076 Kings Highway
King George, VA 22485
A flyer on the meeting notes, "The meeting will be held to discuss the proposed shooting facility…being presented to the county by NON-COUNTY BUSINESS INVESTORS and the NEGATIVE effect it will have on King George County." (Emphasis is mine to highlight what is being pushed at the meeting.)
Those of you who live in the area should attend this meeting to make it clear that there are many residents who support having a new range in King George County. As Virginia becomes more and more urban, it is critical we have plenty of places where we can go to shoot in a safe manner.
