Has anyone ever been to On Target Range in Severn, MD? Just heard about it today and trying to see if its worth a visit.

I used to go there a bunch. It is a decent place to shoot. I haven’t been in 12 years or so, but it looks like the same as it was. Cindy’s in Glen Burnie is decent as well.

I used to go there a few years back. Always went during the workday, never on the weekend or evening. During the workday, it was ok. The lighting back then wasn't very good.

Do not take loaded mags - they must be empty. Has that changed?

I went and the guy behind the counter was rude to me. I haven't been back. Cindy's is much closer to me, and I like the place much more.

I’ve been a member there for about 5 years. I like it because it’s close to home and allows members to call in advance so they can get the next available lane when they arrive. They allow pistols and pistol caliber rifles. The maximum target distance is 25 yards and the minimum is 25 feet. They have rental firearms. You can use your own ammunition or buy theirs. No steel allowed. They have a decent selection of firearms and accessories at close to MSRP. The staff is their weak point. Mostly young and inexperienced with a good bit of turnover. Their location is also a drawback from a personal safety perspective. Lots of loitering around seedy looking strip mall stores and fast food restaurants. I limit my visits to daylight hours.

    Welcome.

Though it seems you may be moving to Texas in the coming months, perhaps post here in the Introductions, so we can know you better:

On Target used to be good, I have not shot there in many years.

The range is ok and the folks behind the counter mean well, but they lack some basic customer service skills. They take safety very seriously, which I truly appreciate, but the way they approach folks about range rules is pretty unsettling.

I witnessed them scare two first time shooters out of signing up for classes, renting pistols and using their lanes. I felt awful and wanted to chase them out the door to apologize and tell them other places to go.

Their prices are also not great. They quoted me $120 above MSRP for a Walther CCP once.

Was a member for years. Stopped going when AGC opened up Steel for Pistol
I may renew again in the spring though.
I rarely had a problem and when I was a member I went almost once a week. Only time I had to wait for a lane (during work day) was when half the lanes were taken up by a class.
    Cased guns
No loaded Mags with the gun
they have a list of rules you sign if you are not a member.

If you can case the gun with the action open and visible when you open the case, all the better.

I was there last week meeting up someone. They have almost no guns in stock

I've been there a few times and felt it was decent. The only thing I don't like is the minimum distance of 25 feet. I usually go to the range to work on my home/self defense skills shooting and like to practice as close as 10-15 feet.

As others have said, they are generally pretty good. Others have already mentioned the 25ft minimum. Leave your phone in the car; last time I was there they wouldn't even let phones go onto the range in your pocket (photography was already prohibited).

I've had one or two times where an employee was a bit rude (the one that sticks out was the guy behind the case being a bit disparaging when I asked about a gun for sale that I wasn't very familiar with). Otherwise, the only time I have seen the employees crabby is when someone comes out of the range with both doors open. And in that case, I don't really blame them.

I have never had a bad experience at On Target. As mentioned, have your pistol ready for inspection and don't go in with loaded mags. I don't like the looks of the strip mall it is in, so don't leave anything in sight in the car while I am there.

Cindy is very nice, with brand new shooting lanes.

Try them both and go with what works for you.

I've had no issues with On Target. It's not the newest but it's acceptable.

The staff varies. Some are better than others.

I belonged to it for about 10 years. They used to give LEO's a pretty good discount. I stopped going in 2006 when my wife got a brain tumor and I had to change jobs. They had just upgraded the lights and stuff around then and I thought it was pretty decent.

Anytime you go, you should keep checking your six on leaving to insure you aren't followed. At night, don't park far away from the front door.

I go all the time. Mostly because it is very close to where I live and work. It's fine. It's nothing to write home about... sort of your average indoor range. It serves its purpose.

I don't know what people are talking about with the loaded mags thing. I've brought loaded mags literally every time I've ever gone there and no one has said a word.

They won't allow cell phones in there anymore. It's always been that there is no photography on the range but now they won't let you even take it in. They will ask you if you have it and if you do they will either hold onto it for you or you can lock it up in your car. Or better yet just say you don't have it on you and go on living your life. Apparently some dick head was holding a gun to his head on the range the other month and instagramming it live, and they decided they'd had enough.

The area isn't as bad as what people are making it out to be. I mean it's not like downtown Annapolis or anything but it's not Baltimore either.

I have have heard about Cindy's though and I keep meaning to check it out.

Many years ago I walked in there with my first 9 mm pistol with three loaded magazines in my back pocket and was told it was against the law for me to transport my firearm and loaded magazines in the same car. I shot my gun paid for my range time and left and have never darkened their doors again people who are ignorant of the law do not deserve my business.

In all fairness, there were many people that believed that you were not allowed to transport loaded magazines. I used to laugh at people rushing to load their 15 mags before matches. I tried to explain the law but, over time, I just gave up.
