TV portrays guns as magic death rays. They always do exactly what the scriptwriters want them to do, every time. One shot clean kill, "a mere flesh wound," or multiple, seemingly ineffective hits raising the dramatic tension: whatever the scriptwriter wants.
Then people expect reality to behave the same way.
