I was finally able to convince my dad to get his HQL and get a handgun. He likes my Beretta APX, but doesn’t want to get one himself. He’s got daily large hands. Any suggestions will be appreciated!

PS: he keeps talking revolvers, but I know NOTHING about revolvers. (Im the Polymer Generation)

Since he sounds old school, I recommend the CZ 75 SP-01 (Pictured). It is a traditional hammer fired DA/SA 9mm pistol that can hold 18+1. It’s great for home defense and target shooting. You can get a decocker version or a safety version. It is a big and heavy duty sized weapon so it isn’t meant for concealed carry. If he wants something smaller, perhaps a CZ 75D PCR or CZ P01.

The SP-01 is as accurate as my high-end Government sized 1911s.

For non pistol type people, I usually recommend a simple platform like a Glock. There are no bells and whistles and, once you rack the slide, all you have to do is pull the trigger and it goes bang. If he has big hands, a Glock 17 will work fine. You can also find used Glocks at reasonable prices.

Glock 17/19 and be done. It's a combat ready handgun that will do it's part when you pull the trigger. Cheap, reliable, and sends lead. What more do you need.

    Simple range run. Maybe HD.

You can’t do better than the CZ 75 SP-01 for those uses. I’ve also found older guys like/trust the hammer design more than a striker. When holstering you can put your thumb on the hammer and it’s not going to have a negligent discharge if something gets in the trigger guard.

It comes with night sights and will outshoot any striker fired gun out there.

I second the SP-01. If he's a lefty or wants to practice left handed the SP-01 tactical has an ambidextrous decocker lever.

Or P01 or PCR if he wants to carry at some point. These two are the same size, but the P01 has a rail and a smooth trigger surface, PCR has no rail but has a textured trigger and a loaded chamber indicator (a very subtle one, not ugly & obnoxious like some).

Gun store or range rentals. He needs to find something that he likes and enjoys shooting. Also, if you know someone who has something he is interested in, have them stop by and have your Dad handle the gun personally. Does he have much experience with handguns? Other than revolvers, is there a caliber or style of revolver he is interested in? For big revolvers, I like Ruger Super Blackhawks or Vaqueros. Not really a carry gun, but they are fun to shoot and built very sturdy. Faster to replace the cylinder than to punch the spent cases out one at a time. The .357/9mm combo Blackhawk is a nice starter pistol, IMO.

Good luck. I hope he finds something he enjoys.

He has little handgun experience besides the times we have gone. He used to go a lot back in the day his state trooper buddy had a ruger revolver about 20 some years ago. I did research and a 357 can also shoot 38 so I thought that could be cool.

I agree with the suggestions to try out as many as possible before he buys.

big hands + old skool = double stack 1911

but definitely rent a few and see what he likes.

based on my experience, small hands are better for revolvers

There are probably well over 100 different guns that will work.

ANY quality manufacturer (Ruger, S&W, Springfield, Colt, Glock, Sig, FN, Beretta, CZ, etc) in a reasonable (.38 Special/9 mm or higher power) caliber.

Best is what HE likes and feels good to HIM.
