The prevailing winds in that area blow N and W much of the year. That so called "sheltered area" is actually the Chesapeake Bay. The winds on the day the idiot mother decided to risk her and her son's life, were blowing 20 to 25 MPH. I agree, this is pure Darwin.b:sad20:

What it's not a kind thing to say about the deceased...considering the well known minimal intellect of Kathleen Kennedy Townsend...it's not surprising her daughter (and unfortunately her son) seemed a Darwin statistic waiting to happen. Sad...truly sad.

To throw politics into a thread about the death of a 41 year old woman and her 8 year old son is despicable. I doubt I agree with any Kennedy on any political topic. I still have compassion on their humanity and sympathy for the family.

Yeah it seems dumb, but I can understand it too. These people did not live there - they were visiting (sheltering for COVID) and were probably completely unfamiliar with the risks. They live in DC normally.

So ball bounces in the water and they make a quick decision to jump in the canoe/kayak and grab it. A pile of small problems blow up into one very big one. Strong winds. Wrong wind direction. Cold water. No PFD. No experience in water. Take anyone of those out of the equation, and the outcome might be completely different.

My (relative) lives in the neighborhood just south of them, and talked to the people that saw them, and my understanding is at the time, they were close enough to be within shouting distance, and that the folks onshore that saw them and actually yelled to them to ask if they needed help, and even told them to just get out and walk to shore. Whether they could or not is hard to say (tides, exact location, water clarity, etc). Apparently the mother didn't acknowledge them, so its tough to say if she heard them or was just too freaked out by the developing situation to find the composure to respond.

People make mistakes. Unfortunately, even very simple ones can have great consequences. Awful when it involves a child. My heart goes out to them and the family.

Regardless of actions, ultimately I do not believe it was ever intended for a mother to watch her child drown as she the same. Very sad and tragic. In the end she paid the ultimate price, and literally had to die with it.

Some of you pathetic weasel posters, make any ignorant comments, did they not die horribly enough?

    RIP dead folk. Damn shame.

Didn’t have to happen. Gotta know what will kill you. Taking Mother Nature for granted is somewhere near the top of the list.

Cold kills. Cold water kills faster. Being on the water, wear your PFD. It will give you a good chance of living.

The problem is that the Kennedy's have been slowly killing themselves off for 60 or more years due to their arrogance and stupidity. Their family's death rate is much higher than the average family's death rate.

Are you sure that's true? Or is it just a large family with higher than average risk?

The average family isn't a target for assassination (especially twice), nor do they pilot small planes.

In addition to that, deaths in the average family don't make headlines nationwide when they die, whether of natural causes or self-induced ones.

I have an uncle who flew 50 missions in Vietnam and he was a test pilot and he brought the F-18 into the USMC, commanded the first MAG of F-18's. He has 4 sons, 3 of them are or were F-18 pilots, one is with the RAG squadron down in Beaufort flying F-35's. The other son is a Col in the USA and served several tours in Iraq and Afghanistan like his brothers did. None of them have received purple hearts.

Of my extended family nobody in my generation has died yet, most are in their 50's or early 60's.

I spent 7 years skydiving and teaching skydiving, static line and free-fall, to first time jumpers and the only injury I got was a broken thumb. 1700 jump, 0 reserve rides.

    Dear Bert,

Just want to know if I can have that Golden Horseshoe that’s been lodged in your arse...when you die of course. If you die.

    Signed,

I am trying to understand the mindset or perhaps sense of entitlement that leads reporters to contact bereaving families - at the peak of their pain - for “comment.” Guess that explains my utter contempt for 90% of news “reporters” (cough).

That is one of the reasons that I have nothing but contempt for Katie Couric. There was a story a number of years ago where 2 kids (10-12 yo) were out on the ice and one fell through and drowned. Katie was interviewing the other kid asking him how it felt to watch his friend drown not being able to help him. The kid was just bawling and what made it worse was his father was there with him and let the interview go on.

I have been told that I have a nasty streak, have no clue where anyone got that idea. But if I had been there I would have told her that it felt like she probably did watching her husband die of cancer knowing there was nothing she could do to help him.

That poor lady certainly used poor judgement which seems to be a trait of the Kennedy family when it comes to transportation. Joe - plane crash, John - lost his command of PT boat while sitting in idle in an active war zone, then killed in open air car, Teddy - crashes car, kills young girlfriend, and his Presidential chances; Kennedy relation skis into a tree after drinking, John Jr - plane crash when he shouldn't have been flying, Patrick - Ambien and alcohol zombie drive up the steps of the Capital.

Not sure if its a true story but the story goes she asked an American sniper if he feels anything about killing in combat and his response was "Recoil". I hope that's true. That lady is disgusting.

Joe Jr. wasn't killed in a plane crash. His aircraft was a experimental bomb he volunteered to fly it. It is speculated that when he went to arm the explosives, they detonated. He was probably the only real hero in the family. :patriot:

Did one of those involve one of the Sheen and Coppola boys all coked up on the Severn ?
    That was a while back.
