Hey folks - look what I won! I donated to and entered one of the prizes in a Knife Rights contest a few months back and actually won this beauty from Olamic Cutlery in CA. It feels and looks incredible - I've never owned Damascus steel before.

    Blade Style: Clip Point
Blade Steel: High Carbon Vanadium Damascus
    Overall Length: 10.5"
Handle: Karelian Birch Burl, HCVD fittings/sub-hilt
    Sheath: Leather

    Thanks, all!

    Absolutely gorgeous, congrats.

Keep it oiled. True Damascus has a tendency to rust (I am sure you already know this)
I actually did not know this. It came with some oil wipes though and I'll definitely be doing that periodically. It's going to live in the safe. :)

    It's real pretty.

Generally, leather holds moisture. For this reason, it is a bad idea to store your knife in its sheath.

Also acids from the tanning process can linger and trash your metal.

I've never understood the leather sheath thing. I have a number of old (100-200 years plus) edged weapons whose sheaths.scabbards were lined with wood, and there's no problems. Often they're covered with leather, or brass, or crocodile hide(!) but the wood seems to protect them from corrosion.
