Not much of a revolver guy, but through some trading, I ended up with a 686-4 (which I think it means a mid-90s manufacture.)

I hadn't noticed it until now, but there is this small circular mark on the left side of the frame, above the trigger and below the cylinder.

I was worried it was a crack, but looking at pictures of older, stripped S&W frames, it looks like it's suppose to be there.

I tried to take a picture of it, but it only came out as a partial circle. But depending on lighting, it's def a full circle and looks ever so slightly higher then the rest of the frame, like it's some sort of plug maybe?

Anyways, anyone know what it is?

    Thx!

I'd say it's a polishing or tooling mark of some kind. I just took a look at mt 686 (no dash) and there is no mark like that at all. Also checked a few other S&W's, 29,10,64. and no mark like that

Trigger pivot stud(proper term?)? That's where it is attached. It shouldn't show.

I think that is where the cylinder stop mount stud would be?

I'm looking at my 629 Classic and this pic. It's either one or the other...or both.

Wouldn't mind seeing the other side of that pistol. Any bulging where the side plate meets with the frame?

No bulging as far as I can tell. Since you had mentioned it's not suppose to show, I contacted S&W. Thanks for your insight!

That side looks very clean.

I'm by no means an expert...on anything. If S&W say it's okay, I would probably be good with that. It's probably always been like that.

Wish I still had my 686  Great gun, great shooter.

Looks likes someone's aim was off when they were putting in the cylinder stud. The circumferences look the same. Just a machining mark.
