So, I have a Beretta A300, Remington 870 and an old used Webley single shot.

I got full choke in a choke set (remington brand) for the 870 and then put the full choke that came with the beretta in.

I patterned them and the Beretta tightened up but the Remington did not.
I measured on the caliper the chokes and I got
.710" for the Full chock from Remington as well .710" as the original choke on the Remington (Modified I think it is marked)

The Webley and the Beretta with the full both measure .685" +/- .002

Beretta and webley are noticably tighter patterns than the Remington.

    What gives?

Absolute diameters aren't important. It is the choke diameter vs actual bore diameter that determines constriction.

The amount of choke depends on the diameter of the barrel. Just because a choke says Full or .040, you may not get that much constriction as that assumes your 12ga barrel is .729 diameter. Some are more, some are less. You need a special inside mike or caliper to measure a shotgun barrel as you have to measure down past the choke, either fixed or removable.

I had read that somewhere else but what got me was the ID of the full choke being the same as the choke that came with the 870. And if I need a tighter pattern than what the full gave me, what do I go to next?

First off, are you using the short chokes or the extended chokes? Extended chokes give better patterns. Next, what do you want to use the 870 for? If you want to use it for Turkey, there are tight, extended chokes just for Turkey hunting. If you want to shoot trap, just stick with the extended chokes.

These are some of the best chokes found today.

If you are not getting the patterns you want, you have two ways to proceed. 1) you can find a gunsmith who can measure the bore of your barrel (sorry, I no longer have the tooling) and 2, you can buy additional chokes. Neither one is cheap. ;)

Trap would normally be a full or imprived modified choke. Pheasant, at least over dogs, probably an improved Cylinder or even a skeet one if the birds flush close as in game farm hunting.
