Overall length is only 27.5" so it wouldn't end up being much shorter if they cut it off down to 26.1" or so. The lever receiver is a lot shorter than the pump so there's less to work with.

(26" is the minimum or it'd be an SBS instead of a non-NFA Shockwave-type.)

ETA: And at $1,300 list, they already service a fairly small market. A Shockwave is almost an impulse buy around $400.

Under 18" barrel would make it a SBS under the NFA and subject to $200 stamp

The OP wants a Shockwave-type gun which would not be NFA, not an SBS, no tax stamp. Overall length still has to be greater than 26". This gun would work but you couldn't cut more than 1.5" off the barrel.

First post nailed it, can’t go much shorter than it already is and maintain >26”. They could only knock an inch or so off the barrel (assuming they don’t lengthen the grip which is a good option).

Shotgun minimum barrel length is 18". Anything shorter is Short Barreled Shotgun, and requires tax stamp.

So you cannot remove more than 1/2" from the barrel.

A lever action shotgun with the bird head grip is about the stupidest thing I can imagine.

A Lever action long gun is stabilized on your shoulder, but this contraption is not, so it means the muzzle gets yanked all over the place when you work the lever action.

How dumb is that when a pump action keeps your muzzle on target?

But you can't play Terminator with a pump gun.

A factory pistol grip 12 ga lever gun is not a shotgun.

If the gun comes from the factory with a pistol grip only, it is not considered a shotgun. The federal definition of "shotgun" includes the term "meant to be fired from the shoulder" so pistol grip guns are not quite the same shotguns. In this case the barrel can go shorter than 18". Still has to be longer than 26" overall to avoid being an SBS. This is the same set of rules that allows us to have the Mossberg Shockwave (and the Remington version too) as cash-n-carry non-NFA guns.

    Duh.

    :D

But it does mean, if someone puts a stock on one, it does not become an SBS, just a shotgun.

To avoid becoming an AOW . But that's a minor detail , let's just say NFA vs non-NFA .

Mainstream pistol grip only firearm somewhat resembling a shotgun typically has 18in or just over bbl . If an 18in bbl ( shotgun - like firearm ) has a regular buttstock installed, it becomes a shotgun .

If a ( Shockwave- type ) bbl is installed on a regular shotgun , an SBS is created .

If the birdshead grip on a ( Shockwave - type firearm ) is replaced with a typical " pistol grip " ( the kind at nearly right angle to bore ) it would probably become an AOW

The 26in OAL with a smoothbore always applys ( to avoid NFA status of some sort.

If the ( thing that goes bang ) came from factory with a buttstock, had buttstock in same box from factory , or had buttstock installed subsequently , the minimum bbl length bbl ( 18 shotgun' 16 rifle ) applys to remain non-NFA .

[ No , these possabilities are not exhaustive, just illiustrating some of the issues from this thread .]
