Anyone here know much about Mas 49/56 rifles converted to 308?

I googled it and found both good and bad reviews. Some say Century did horrible jobs, others say they were 7.62 NATO conversions done. I am potentially interested in one, mainly due to the 7.62 NATO chambering as the 7.5 French does not interest me. Anyone have one?

There are a couple people here who have had good experiences. Personally, I am not a fan........

    7.5 280 MPa
    7.62*51 415 MPa
    .308 Winchester 430 MPa

Note these are Wikipedia ranges and do not reflect the full range of pressures you can load to but see that both the 7.62*51 and .308 are much higher pressure than the gun was built for.

Plus..........frankly it was a bad idea. 7.5 French is a good round, PRVI is available and is easily supportable via hand loading.

One in 7.5 is on my list and has been for a while.

I think it's well understood that the Wikipedia pressure is wrong for 7.5x54 French. Many other more reputable sources put the pressure right up there w/ the 7.62x51. +-10% depending on the source. They push the same bullet weight almost the exact same speed. Just can't be done w/ 40% less pressure.

I have two in 7.5 French but none in 308. I understand some of the problems w/ them were poor chamber reaming (rough) and cutting coils off the recoil spring. Get a replacement spring and smooth out the chamber if needed (worst case will require setting it back a little more and cutting it again.)

FWIW, one can build an adj gas block :innocent0
