I'm definately a steel snob. VG-10 spec elite, d2 benchmade osborne axis, s30v vantage pro, impressively heat-treated aus-8 of cold steel(performs much better than other aus-8's i've had, I guess it's just that cold steel is very good at heat-treating it)...and now........cpm-m4.
Tomorrow I should be getting my osborne 810contego with cpm-m4 blade. Thankfully, Benchmade is getting towards properly heat treating the cpm-m4 and getting it around 62-64 hrc instead of the underhardened versions they put out before.
I'm excited to see how the cpm-m4 performs. In the blade steel tests on the bladeforums, it's supposed to outperform d2 pretty well on everything except corrosion resistance(with chromium around 4%, it's no wonder). It's supposed to have a very fine grain structure and take a superb edge...then hold it forever. I've been amazed at how well my d2 benchmade holds an edge. I've reduced the angle to around 15 degrees on either side(both the toughness and hardness of the d2 can support such a shallow angle without rolling or chipping...it's where this steel really shines over lesser steel) and been pleasantly surprised at how it makes hair leap off my arm. cpm-m4's supposed to take an even keener edge, then hold it better...making me really impatient for tomorrow when it arrives in the mail.
Oh, here's a picture of the new addition that will be my edc knife for a long time.
and for some tests...read the links below.

another m4 knife i was thinking of getting but didn't because i like the axis lock better than spyderco's...

another testament to cpm-m4...it's essentially the steel of choice in bladesports...as seen here...
