When I started looking for parts for my budget build, I had a hard time finding non-pistol, non-top tier HBAR barrels.

Delta Team Tactical has a 16" HBAR 1:7 barrel, although you get the joy of DTT shipping/processing times (and no one answering the phone and email reply being a week or two later).

I expect it to be delivered today, so I can post up pics/info, if desired.

Edit: just searched the DTT site, and they also list some built uppers, not just the one barrel.

I recently completed a parts AR (5.56). I sourced my barrel and BCG from Delta Team Tactical at a really good price. I wanted to see how cheap I could build one. I already had a DPMS stripped upper (slick side) but bought everything else. I came in at around $400 once I paid a smith to install the barrel. Shoots great so far. However I have upgraded a lot now.

That being said, I have no issues with DTT products so far. I plan on getting a a complete upper from them for my pistol build.

What is a decent, inexpensive combination for gas block, front sight, and handguard/rail for an HBAR?

I am interested in building reasonably ($400 total) cheap hbar trunk gun.

You want to float the barrel or not? If so, I could bring you in around 400 for a quality upper, from parts.

Just to be clear, I was looking to complete the whole rifle for around $400 (if possible). I have a stock, and maybe a BCG.
    Lower+parts kit $130
    BCG $70
mil spec buffer tube kit $30
    Upper+barrel+parts+gas block about $200ish?

I don't want anything too good or expensive sitting in my trunk most of the time. The good stuff will go on pre-ban lowers. It would only be used for occasional practice and possible emergency.

So cheap, mil-spec/reliable. Free float or not doesn't matter to me.

This barrel seemed decent for the price.

Hell, I can do that no problem.

That should run you $225, before shipping, once they all come back in stock.

The KAK barrel is .740 below the handguard, comes up to .750 for the gas block, then goes back to .740 to the muzzle. After a discussion with an employee of an IP, if can be used, with no legal issues. FWIW, I can get MOA/sub-MOA with that KAK barrel, if it is free floated.

Out of curiosity, what are decent quality/cheap free float options?

Decent quality and cheap really don't go well together, when it comes to AR parts. While I understand the desire to save some money, you will be getting what you pay for. It is your call, but I would be looking at the weights of the hand guards and how much they cost.

I'm a fan of going as light as I legally can on an AR. A few members on here can attest to what I did with my 300BLK for hunting. I went with a Strike Industries Mega Fin G2 12" keymod. It weighs 9oz and set me back 145. I picked up a KMR clone for about 1/2 the price of a KMR by doing that.

At the very least, I'd recommend looking at UTG. But if you like what you see, there is no harm in taking a chance.

Thought I'd mention, I picked up an eBay NSR clone. Seems to be a pretty good clone. I haven't fully installed it as I am painting it and am waiting on the gas pin that Brownell's forgot to put in the shipping box.

A quick fit install when I put the barrel nut on with just the rear screws, it is on straight with it nice and flat measured with a steel straight edge as well. Rail spacing is correct and it is pretty light for 13.5" long, a little over 10oz with the aluminum barrel nut on my scale with the handguard. It was $50.

It doesn't look as nice as some rails and there are some that are lighter, but appears very sturdy (I tried putting it over my knee and bending it and I could barely get any flex out of it. I wasn't using all my strength, but I was putting an easy 70-80lbs of force down on it)

Only issue I see is the screw hole spacing on the nut or the rail is very slightly off. Maybe 1 milimeter at most from one side to the other. They can be installed fine though as mentioned without any rail cant.

    Just a thought.
