50/50 mix of vinegar and water. Apply liberally. With a closepin on your nose.

This. My former in-laws swapped out paint and wall paper in thier home on a regular basis. When you walked in and smelled vinegar they were either making sauerkraut or my father in law was taking down wall paper. Worked really well.

I've done a putty knife (scraper) to pick an edge on the paper, then pulled it off. Once the paper's off, i went back with a bug sprayer full of plain water, let it soak a minute, then putty knifed it off

Worked ok, not smelly, not dirty

Beat me to it. Depending on the size job I use Dep diluted for a pump up garden sprayer.
Dry strip off the surface layer, spray til moist, wait a few, spray til wet, wait a few, peel off whole sheets with a wide putty knife. Trick is to wait long enough for the chemistry to do the work.
I don't like the claw because I always ding up the wall underneath.

If you press too hard it does. Lil pressure all is needed for liquid to get in the wallpaper

I haven't tried it as I avoid wallpaper like the plague and won't let my wife even think of putting the stuff up.

Supposedly a fabric softener and water mixture works well and it would sure smell a lot beter than vinegar. A quick google search will provide details on ratios.
