So I'm having another issue tonight.I have a Lyman Die set and tried to de prime and size the case Die clearly stamp 45 colt FL but brass doesn't start more then 1/8" inn before i have a major bind so i stopped .Die set is used so I took all 3 die apart clean them and gave them a good shot of one shot and a drop Kroil on the threads . Put the caliper on the brass every piece is just under .480. So I inside measured the die and i have .468.5 call it .469 whats up with that ? I'm going to assume a bad die. Bring it on MDS Brain Trust

    IIRC , that's Virgin brass ?

The next useful data point is for you to measure the ID of y your chambers .

Well, you said in the post right after mine that the cases were lubed. With a steel sizing die that was going to be my next suggestion.

I'm out of ideas now. I've never used steel dies, maybe they still require a lot of force, even with lube?

    Bad die.
The brass in inside the spec and the die is too small.

Thats what I'm thinking. the die set is a used set but near perfect condition. but when the brass is larger then die opening and brass is to specs. I dont see any other answer. another member was saying something about different Colt brass but i cant find it in any books i have

    Lance,

I have to agree, it is probably an out of spec die. Call Lyman, they will usually honor a production error for the life of the article.

well that was quick. I beg to differ unless I'm missing something
Our dies are meant to take cases down to right around the SAAMI minimum for straight wall cases like the .45 Colt. The maximum case diameter for that case is .480”, however the minimum is .474”. We also account for a few thousands worth of “spring-back” in the brass itself which is why the ring is set to .469”. This means cases sized in our die should come out right around the SAAMI minimum of .474”. The .469” inside diameter of the carbide ring on that die is correct and what all of our .45 Colt dies are here at the factory.

Get yourself an RCBS carbide die set and eliminate any issues. I have been using my set for close to 4 decades and zero problems.

    Thats not necessary at all.
Shake your lube well before you spray it and allow it to dry completely before sizing. The cases should be sticky before you try to size them?
I would suggest Dillon lube or Imperial Sizing wax.

I use cable lube from Home Depot. It is either yellow or clear and you mix it with 91% alcohol (from Walmart). I mix it in a Home Depot spray bottle by filling it half full with lube and adding alcohol until it is thinned enough to spray. I spray my brass on a baking pan and lay it in front of a small 8 inch fan (Walmart). When they dry, I just start up the old Dillon and away we go.
